Ross Barkley

That's fine, but there's reasonable expectations, then there's being irrational.

It's like saying, "yes, he's the complete footballer, but... can't he grow another two feet and run 3 seconds faster over 100m?"

I'll never get why people can't just enjoy the player Barkley is, instead of wanting him to be Thomas Gravesen. I'd understand it if he was actively bad at what he did - like Rodwell - but he's a genuinely elite level playmaker (and will only get better) and people still moan about him not throwing tackles and running around nipping at peoples ankles.
Its not irrational to expect him not to bottle so many challenges or press his nearest man now and again

He's a creative playmaker - he doesn't throw tackles as that is not his game. He fills defensive space when needed, but that's it, and that's as it should be.

Zidane, one of the best players ever, was exactly the same, yet it seems acceptable to ask Barkley to completely forego his talents, yet you'd obviously be looked at strange if you suggested the same of Zidane.

Kevin Sheedy was one of my all time favourite players...and I honestly can't remember him ever making a challenge...would I change that? Not for a minute, he was fantastic at what he did best

He put in at least 2 solid tackles playing for England so he can do it, perhaps he's told not to? The main thing holding him back as far as I'm concerned is he often takes too many touches of the ball. If he develops his ability to recognise when it's best to move the ball on quickly, he'll be a great. My only concern about this is that it could be about his ability to the read the game well, vision if you like and that's not any easy thing to develop.

Zidane used to get stuck in, he was one of the best snides going.

Just because hes a creative playmaker doesn't mean he can't get stuck in, some of the worlds best excel at that side of it.

And for what its worth im not one saying he should run around like a headless chicken, just a few times when hes 5 yards off an opponent, press them so they Don't have all the time in the world

One of the journos on Sunday Supplement this morning said 'Barkley is playing his way out of the England team'. I was very critical of Barkley last season, and he has been much more effective for Everton this season. What I do see, however, and its just my opinion, is that despite the odd good run, and turn to beat a defender, and the odd shot, Ross seems to be particularly static compared with our other midfielders. Against Holland, he did not do much wrong, maybe just the odd stray pass, but most of the time he kept his passes simple and seemed to be content to keep to his position rather that look for the ball. It was as if he was deliberately trying to be anonymous. And he still has a habit of 'not tackling' and simply making a gesture and letting a player go past him. He is not really a tackler....part of his game that I find frustrating. So...as I say...more effective for Everton this season, but difficult to see him starting for England in the Euros. Just my opinion, of course.

I have sympathy for Elements of your opinion however it really doesn't stand up to scrutiny. The insinuation is that he has become safe yet if we use stats from all competitions he is the most productive English midfieder in the league & has an almost identical premier league record to dellI Alli yet manages to have a pass completion of 88% (higher a than ozil silva coutinho) versus Alli's 75% he also averages of 50 touches per game Alli has 30.

If he doesn't start for England then it's a farce. I enjoyed Liverpool v Tottenham yesterday good tempo to the game two
Teams wanting to win I'm sure a lot us would like Everton to play in the same manner however the midfield quality was very very low Milner's pass completion barely over 60% delli Alli 68% dembele showed them how to do it 88% & the best player on the pitch I'm can't be bothered looking into Henderson's stats as I'm sure they will be low.

The reason dembele achieved this is due to his ability to receive the ball under pressure & also retain possession whilst under pressure. Ross Barkley is the only English midfieder who can do this full stop.

Delli Alli Henderson Milner are all in the same category as Gerard & lampard they will always require another midfielder in the team to enable the midfield to gain any control. Barkely can do this with relative ease whilst Also being able to score & assist. I like Alli he is quality real competitor but he has different qualities to Barkley & very much a premier league player.

If you watched the Classico after the Liverpool game the difference in technique was massive only dembele alderwield Coutinho & eriksen have anywhere the level of technique required to play in that game Barkley could comfortably play at that level.

Everton have McCarthy, Besic, Barry, Lennon to do the hard work...creativity is Ross's strength
Not a full side though, Like said though not saying run around like a mad man, just occasionally press nearest man so they don't have so much time and entrr our half unoposed and don't shirk the odd challenge, which for a lad of his build shouldn't happen

Zidane was light years ahead of Barkley, Zidanes reading of the game was on a different level altogether. People really are deluding themselves expecting Barkley to ever get anywhere near half as good.

Sharks circling on the club.

that's because we have a very very good squad and we are plucky little old Everton

See it as a compliment rather than looking at a negative

This summer we need a massive statement of intent with a world class marquee signing
