Ross Barkley insists he must shake off his tag as a player with potential - and take his performances to the “next level”.
The Everton midfielder says manager
Ronald Koeman is demanding major improvements from him this season and expects to see more goals and assists from the Academy product. Barkley captained the Blues on Tuesday night and scored
in the 4-0 EFL Cup second round win over Yeovil Town at Goodison. The 22-year-old has now netted twice in the opening three games of the season and also provided the pass for
Kevin Mirallas to score at West Brom last weekend.
And Barkley is now aiming to maintain that rate of impact throughout the campaign.“He expects the best from everyone,” Barkley said of Koeman. “Our careers don’t last long in football so we need to make the most of it and enjoy every moment of it. “Last season, things started well but in the end they didn’t turn out the way we wanted them to but we have got to forget about the past and focus on future.

“We have started well this season and the manager wants us to continue kicking on, our fitness is getting better, our confidence is high and we’re on a high at the moment.” On the eve of the new season Koeman urged Barkley to show “more cleverness”. “All of the lads have had a meeting with the gaffer and he’s said to me that he expects another 15-20% from me to get to the next level, which I’m aiming to get to,” he added. “I’ve got to add more goals, I’ve got to add more assists but as well as defensively, I have got to improve that but in the first few games of the season I have.
“The main thing for all of us is to keep improving as a group.” “I’m always focused on improving and I know I’m at an age now where I’m not a kid,” Barkley went on to say. “I can’t be classed as potential anymore, I know I’ve got to show what I can do.“I’ve showed it in glimpses throughout the years and, obviously, I want a more consistent performance."
Koeman handed boyhood Blue Barkley the captain’s armband for Tuesday night’s EFL Cup tie and revealed he was the “best option” to lead the team.

So does Barkley think it was reward for his early season work?“Maybe, you can see it that way,” he said. “The gaffer knows how much Everton means to me and what it means to the fans to see a local lad lead out the side. “It’s a good sign from the manager and the manager must have seen something in me to let me lead out the side. “It was a privilege to do that but we know Jags is the captain, I’m not the captain.“I was over the moon to do it but Jags will be captain at the weekend.”
Barkley extinguished
any lingering threat of a Yeovil fightback with just over 20 minutes to go at Goodison when he caught Artur Krysiak unawares with a smart free-kick And as the England international celebrated he lifted his shirt to reveal a tribute to Sid Benson, the club scout who sadly passed away last week.
“I was devastated he passed away through the week,” Barkley said. “He brought me to Everton when I was a kid and always believed I’d get to the top, he said it since I was a kid. “I’ve spoke to him every week since I was a kid and he really helped me coming to the club, speaking to me all the time, all the way through.“He was always at the Academy, always watching, seeing me improve and constantly giving me text messages.“I only spoke to him the day before he passed. I was meant to go and see him the day after so I was sad. “So the t-shirt was just a little message for Sid and his family.”
