Round of 16

Being a football nerd of a certain vintage, I collect high-quality recordings of great football matches. My video collection gave way to DVDs, and they have given way to hard drives/USB storage, etc. So, I like to collect the truly great games over the years and occassionally rewatch them at my leisure as the decades pass.

Every tournament adds a few matches to my collection. This one? Not a bean yet. I have recorded all of the highlights, but there isn't a single match worthy of a full rewatch after the event. I expect that will change before the end, but it's a good barometer of whether I think the quality has been up to much.

Germany-Spain might be the one. We live in hope.
Ya probably best game I have seen in the tournament so far was the Croatia and Albania game but that was more the crazy football than the actual quality of it

I like Austria and the way they play but i wouldn't be surprised if they got knocked out today by Turkey.
Kinda reminds me of ours (Croatia) in 2008 when we were flying in group stage and gone against Turks in quarters, scored what we thought a winning goal in 120th minute only for Turks to immediately respond and equalize in last second of the match (and then win on penalties).

Despite losing World Cup final and two more semi-finals in 1998 and 2022, that last second defeat vs Turkey still remains most traumatic that i (and most of nation) ever experienced in football terms.
From sheer euphoria to absolute depression in a single minute.

I have changed my mind on the outcome of this one about five times today.

I seem to over-estimate the Turksbu dint of them always beating Czechia and/or throwing at least one upset per tournament.

Leaning Austria at the moment, just.

I fancy the Turks on penalties.

Austria play to a system with great discipline - and that gets you so far - but the further you go in these competitions the more important the great individuals. I think Austria lack those.

Turkey have some good individuals - and are prepared to take a few risks. They might also collapse emotionally in the manner of Cristiano Ronaldo, so who knows.

Well, short of Brazil losing 7-1 to Germany, it was arguably the worst exit ever at a major tournament. The manner of it was ludicrous and hugely embarrassing.

A lot of bad luck too, especially losing Eduardo da Silva before tournament when that Birmingham [Poor language removed] broke his leg.
He was in great form for Arsenal, best scorer of Euro qualifiers for us and then that happened, weakened us immensely and also ruined Arsenal title campaign (not to mention his career).
