rugby world cup 2007

Dallaglio is largely there because of our complete and utter balls up in the planning for this tournament. For years we had to play Corry at #8 because he was skipper. I can't think of a slower #8 in world rugby but he played pretty much every game and therefore we didn't get a chance to blood the likes of Ward-Smith and Easter. I think had he been fit Ward-Smith would have come instead of Dallaglio but partly because he wasn't and partly because Dallaglio did well for Wasps in their big games he was included. Likewise with all of the back row really. Blind side has been less of a problem as the likes of Worsley and Moody are experienced but for years we insisted on playing Moody out of position at #7 so again we have a real lack of experience in this crucial position.

As for Catt, well it seems that we're clutching at straws with his selection. We've had four years since the last world cup and you can probably count on one hand the number of positions that are nailed down. Inside centre has been a particular problem and the selectors don't seem to have a clue who they want there. It seems from the outside as though they aren't impressed by anyone from the Zurich Premiership and are just trying out anyone and everyone in the hope that someone takes to international rugby. Players are thrown in and tossed out again with alarming regularity. I'm inclined to think that Catt played yesterday because they thought America would be easy pickings and he would be able to create a bit more than Faz and boost our confidence for SA because I can't imagine why you would want him in the side against the Boks (heck, they didn't want him which is why he came to this country in the first place). Farrell doesn't have the pace but at least he knows how to draw his marker and offload in the tackle. Playing centre generally isn't about scoring length of the field tries, it's about creating space for the flyers outside you. I'd like to see Faz given a go with Barkley because Wilkinson has a habit of crabbing sideways and really cramping the space of the #12 who by the time he gets the ball has half the opposition back row down his neck and precious little forward momentum to cross the gain line. It's not as if we need Wilkinson for his goal kicking either as Barkley did ok yesterday and Faz averaged something like 85% success rate in League and was one of the highest points scorers in Wigan history so knows how to kick goals as well.

No need mate theres more Irish over here there are at home, add a sprinkleing of aussie girls who like our accent and roberts your fathers brother!

???????????????Robert are you my uncle??????????????????

I think the Kiwi backs though are poor at defending, admitedly their amazing going forwad but big questions remain about their back conentration.

I think saying they are poor at defending is a bit tough, they don't exactly leak tries, sure they were soft tries, one an intercept - just pushing the pass too far there. The other try, well lets just say that I think they'd be the first to admit that they went off the boil for about 20 mins in the 2nd half, and let Italy get a bit of ball-time.

I know it was Italy and the game was over but they gifted them some soft tires. I noticed the same in the tri nations. For me the smart money is on the Aussies. Oh and the Paddys of course!

Don't make me laugh, there is nothing smart about Aussie

As usual some very intelligent comments Bruce!

I'm still trying to understand what England has been doing for the past 4 years, why have they not been bleeding in the new up n' coming talent?! The best money they could spend would be on developmental (under 21s) sides being sent downunder for a decent tour - no hype, no bullshit, just rugby - treat it as an apprenticeship before being able to pull on the white jumper!

Have they simply been spending all the time convincing the old buggers not to retire? Too slow, too old, and too predictable! Damn now they'll prolly go on and win the damn thing again with a bunch of has-beens - ok that was a bit below the belt :P

Seems like it. I can't think of too many young players that have actually come through. It's like we've promoted the reserves from four years ago and that's it. The likes of Tait should have been regulars by now but we've messed them around so much. At the risk of repeating myself, the back row is the most important part of the team and most of the players tried in that position were around in Australia but couldn't get in it (Worsley, Moody, Corry etc.) and yet they've taken the vast majority of game time, leaving the likes of Rees and Lund kicking their heels. The same in the locks, instead of playing Deacon, Palmer et al on a regular basis we've gone with old codgers like Grewcock, Shaw, Borthwick etc. all the time. Heck even in the front row we've done a bit better with Sheridan and Stevens coming through but the majority there are still well over 30. It was depressing watching the introduction where each player said his name, age and position. I think there were about two players under 30. And the Aussies called us Dads Army last time
