Ryan Ledson

It's a terrific goal from him. I imagine we will look to get him out on loan. There is a possibility Martinez will skip that step and get him straight involved though.

He has the confidence to play men's football. I remember one of the first times I had seen him was an under 18's derby at their pitch. Ledson had played a few times as a 14-15 year old in the under 18's. He was reminiscent to a young Rodwell at that stage with his build.

However I remember when we played there, there was a lot of talk from the Liverpool side of things about how Everton would handle the physicality of the older Liverpool lads. We had a very young team, ended up playing with 3-4 under 16's. The consensus was we had the better players, but Liverpool would try and kick us out of the game.

Ledson was captain and had only turned 16 a couple of months previously. It seemed to epitomise how young a team we had. About 2 minutes into the game the first 50-50 challenge occurred for Ledson with one of their top midfield players. Ledson absolutely annihilated him, both his legs went over his head such was the force of the tackle. The Liverpool player was left writhing in agony.

I remember Ledson's reaction well. He got up, dusted himself down and looked around the pitch. He looked at different Liverpool players to see if any of them fancied having a go at him (none did) and at the Everton players as if to say "we've got nothing to fear with these". He told the ref he'd "won the ball" (which was nowhere near the case!) and after it was done, jogged into position, before telling his teammates to "get stuck in".

It's hard to describe just how impressed I was with him. The fact that we battered them and lost the game due to a dubious penalty and subsequently missing one ourselves didn't really bother me. That small incident made up for it. We had a player there who had a fearless mentality and a genuine leader on the pitch. More importantly one who understood what it means to play for Everton, and had no fear of Liverpool.

It was reminiscent to how Gerrard would play against us. They say Gerrard as a teenager slammed Paul Ince in training and then told him he wanted his place. Ledson has the same authority around him.

I compared him to Rodwell earlier. He probably lacks Rodwells comfort on the ball, but he has a drive, determination and aggression that Rodwell lacked.

Footage of that very incident:

Great attitude, but bloody hell, if that Liverpool players' leg had been planted, it'd have been snapped.
