'Peter Reid is one of my best mates, so are Andy Gray and Paul Bracewell whom I worked with at Sunderland – these people have always made me aware of just how special and unique a club Everton is and I feel really enthused and energised to come in as manager,' said the former England manager.

'I've always thought Everton was a great club. It's one of the biggest there is. Obviously, the club has gone through a difficult spell and hopefully we can put that behind us as quickly as possible and start looking upwards again.

'Because, ultimately, it's the ambition of the club, the ambition of the owner and the board, allied to the fact that it's Everton and all the fantastic history, which have proved to be key for me.

'Ambition is important for any manager or coach, owner or director. It's what you need to have and hopefully we can deliver to the fans to get this club high up the league. That's what we're aiming for.'

'I think that whatever's happened before we've just got to all rally around together. Players, fans and staff,' he added.

'Because we are all in it together. Let's all pull in the same direction. Let's try to get a healthy spirit around the club. That's difficult when you're losing but the win last night over West Ham and the magnificent atmosphere around Goodison, which was just brilliant, well that's lifted everybody around the club.'

We've got to try to keep our heads up and push ourselves until we make sure we get that better. The fans are the most important people at any football club, particularly here, and we have to give the players every possibility to play to their best, really give them no excuses for not playing to their best and get them right back up to the top level we believe they're capable of.'

Does he " get us" though?

Originally I said I'd be embarrassed but by this point I've just accepted it. He's moaned for years about not getting a chance at a decent club, so let's see what he can do.

I'm hoping he feels hungry to prove he's got more in the tank than avoiding the drop. The football will probably be grim but if he won a cup or managed a 4th place finish I wouldn't care.

I always felt he was underated. I don't think he will be like Roy, Moyes or Pulis who deliberately temper expectations to ease the pressure on them.

I will support him, and his backroom staff, because to do otherwise (at least at the ground) would simply be self-destruction at the moment. We need to get a good win on Saturday and anything at all from the rs will hopefully be the catalyst for a decent run toward Christmas?

I sincerely hope he can get a mini revival in form from Jags and Williams, because I would like him to keep Keane out of the spotlight until a more permanent partner can be briught in in the January window. I also hope the form of Kenny allows Seamus the optimum time on the sidelines recovering.

Other than that, get some backs to the wall mentality going if we let a goal in; resist the temptation to shift Wayne back up front and rope Mirallas, Scneiderlin and Martina together and use them as hardcore in the footings of the new stadium!

You don't have to look that far as half our so called fans are doing it too. Let him have his go with us, christ we have only managed a bloody FA cup in 25 years we are not exactly a big club in relation to success, yeah passionate fans etc.... but lets not kid ourselves.

It's phenomenonal (heavy Spanish accent), look where the yampy Barcelona experiment has got us, Martinez and Koamen, the first one dismantled defence training and the recent one sold off and fell out with our flair and attack, but ok that's football (heavy Dutch accent). Looking forward to my bostin pint of wine and pie football. (heavy Birmingham accent).

Surely he won't be given any funds to spare in January to bring in his dross to suit his style of play? We'll be left with even more unneeded players the real new Manager will need to turnover next Summer.
A completely pointless, panic appointment this.
I hope they'll have an idea on who may come in the summer, and a significant reason behind a director of football is continuity when managers come and go...
Thing is though lads, they're gonna have to give him some money to get a CF and couple of CB's in at the very least. Maybe even a (gulp) LB?

Two massive grock CB's we need. None of this ball playing lark in our own area.

I am thinking the same. Since other clubs are trying to belittle us with him, I can't wait to tell them'Big Sam own you" when we beat them.
Spot on - couldn't care what other clubs think. I want other clubs to hate us, that means we beat them.

Yeah, I mean the way some people are going on, you'd think we'd been playing like Barca for the past 25 years.....

I'm glad we got shut of that disaster Koeman, he was poison for Everton.

But this is like having the cup of poison taken away and then being served up a cup of steaming hot piss.

Apologies for the imagery, but you get what I mean.
Hear me out...

One way to look at it could be that for the majority of Sam's life, we have been a massive club. He will know this, as will Sammy Lee. This is in stark contrast to Ronald Koeman who really couldn't have cared less about Everton at all. I'm waiting for him to become a pro-golfer, all the time he spent at Formby.

Now I'm aware Sam may be here partly for the money, but at least he will be aware of our history and stature. That at least makes a change.
