Not convinced that this would be a good signing. He is quite old now and some have said no pace, however what is his injury record like?

You could have easily summed this up to:Ok so here goes. I'd be in favour of this deal. Yes there are always long term goals for a cub, but sometimes there are short term needs as well. We are currently 4 off top spot with a game in hand through 15 games. I'll be honest I don't remember another January where this was the case in my time watching them. We have an experienced manager who's used to winning trophies. We are well positioned and he will want some sort terms signings to help boost this position.
We could go and get a younger model in, but it would cost a lot more. It would also likely take a bit of time to allow such a player to settle, so while there may be a long term advantage, there will be a relative short term hit. That will probably defeat the object for the manager. You wouldn't get an Allan, or a Doucoure mid season.
On the player himself, he is another who could be put into the world class category when he was at his best. I fully accept that is not where he is at now. But at his best, he would have been the best midfielder in the league. No doubt about it. World cup winner, 80 caps for Germany, won leagues in Spain and Italy for the biggest teams. The question is, how much deterioration has been seen from the player since those days? It's a very hard one to answer.
I do think we have to trust Ancelotti on these deals. Not in a cliched "trust your manager" type of way, but he has managed these players. He will know the characters who can excel, the ones who have something to add to the enviroment we are in, the leaders, the players who can think their way through games rather than those who will rely on physical strength. He will also know the ones who are not suited to playing in a poorer team. We signed James, who has thus far had an overwhelmingly positive impact, and Allan who has been much the same. He wanted Thiago Silva who has been excellent for Chelsea (and would have been great here) but didn't go for Bale who has struggled. He seems a good man manager and judge of character. He's seen this guy day in day otu so I'm happy to trust that.
As for the player himself, he will not be able to get box to box anymore. I imagine he will sit in the 6 when he plays and rely on his ability to read the game and pass the ball, which are still very good. He has good size off set plays. I think we've seen with James, genuinely top draw players, while the physical attributes wain have a lot going on in the head to keep them one step ahead. That will be easier for Khedira playing in a "6" role than James playing wide right. It's a position that needs positioning and concentration. Davies was excellent against Sheffield United in said role, Khedira could be better.
A 6month loan, and reviewing in the summer makes a lot of sense to me. Hopefully Davies keeps improving (and it's another player to learn from) and we see Gbamin back. Even if he sees us through for 6 months the deal makes sense. Best case scenario we do a rolling deal with him and a bit like Gareth Barry we get a bit more out of him.
His injury record is a worry of course. It's the one difficulty in this. We will need certain assurances I'm sure, and wthout those it won't happen. In fairness to him, he may have recovered from injury and just be out of favour at Juventus. If so, he is probably relatively fresh- I hope so if he comes. A short term deal covers that though.
Ultimately you see how Ancelotti has used James, Coleman, Allan and now even Sigurdsson, and you see a manager who knows how to utilise the experience and intelligence of older footballers, while covering weaknesses they have. It makes sense to lean on that.
So while I understand some of the concerns, for me it's a positive.
You could have easily summed this up to:
“it’s a gamble that may work”
Not seen much of him in years but he was proper class once upon a time, Could be a Barry-esque inspired signing then again could go the way of the dosser delph, doesn’t come across as an absolute nobhead like delph though so already looking positive.
