Wouldn’t it cheaper to cut our losses and pay him off ? How much of his contract does he have left to run, it’s gotta be better than him knocking around stinking the place out at what ever club his been loaned to.

Steve Walsh got this one (one of many) badly wrong

In short, no. If we keep him our options are to loan him out again for a percentage of his wages and a fee, sell him to someone eventually or have him stick around and we pay him his deal until it expires.

Paying him up has no upside which is why clubs don't do it, even to players they want rid of. It's like picking the worst option and guaranteeing it rather than trying to engineer one of the other options over time.

It's not like he's a poison pill in the changing room.

Nobody can say they're honestly surprised by this either. It will be the same with a few more loanees this summer. Temporary moves are just that, they're mostly all going to come back eventually.

It's on Brands now to get them out properly.

Yeah amuses the hell out of me when people say "pay his contract up", why?

2 years left - 100k a week - 10m pay off.

Or loan him out for 2 years, 50% wages paid - 5m in the bank.

Even if you can't loan him out for the two years, why pay him £10m and then not at least have the option of using him in that time if you need to?

Yeah, at the least, if hes going to collect a check every week for doing nothing, force him to see the fruits of his decision(not getting to play). If he wants to run his career into the ground for money, dont help him by paying him off, either he decides playing is more important than getting money he should be getting, or he struggles to find any place to play.

Baffles me this lad, to say he was on Barca’s books and now looks like he wouldn’t get a game for his local boozer?
