2022/23 Seamus Coleman

Had one game where I thought I might have called this wrong: the derby where he was excellent.

The rest of the time he was caught upfield all the time and blowing for tugs getting back into position...a lad of 21! And his positional lack of sense behind the ball was constantly exploited.

I will be amazed if Dyche turns to him to start this season.

Good call, he was very good in the Derby, he was getting incrementally better in that period. He has more in his locker offensively then we’ve seen, I saw it at Rangers, almost like he’s concentrating on his defending to much. He needs development definitely, but I think he has head room and full tilt will be a player.

He won’t play for the rest of the season though, fit it Coleman’s shirt. Heard rumblings this side of the water that this is Seamus’s last year - unless thats changed in the meantime - we will be looking to Patterson from next season onward.

...looking to bring a starter in if Seamus retires.

You don’t think he will develop and grow into it - Seamus was a couple of seasons with us via a loan and stint on the wing before he got the nod.
IIRC when he first came in Seamus was all over the shop positionally. I particularly remember a game aginst Benfica where he was atrocious.

However, even before he went out to Blackpool he was finding his feet. Remember the Everton v Spurs game where he had Bale in his arse pocket?

Patterson is nowhere near that level now. So it's absolutley necessary to farm him out to a lower division. Either that or sell him. I'm not arsed either way tbh.

A couple games he was all over the shop at fullback, pretty bad positionally - went to Blackpool found his feet, then came back into the team a winger before drifting back. Was over a couple of years or a year and a half maybe.

Think Patterson has the quality myself, needs developing though, he has more in his locker IMHO. We need a second right full mind.

Sounds like he might make the Palace game.

Looks like Godfrey will stand in for him.
I hope not Dave, Godfrey is normally better at left back, even though he is right footed, but, not to put too fine a point on it. He has been very poor at left back recently and I wouldn't like to see him at right back. I know you are dead set against Patterson, but, I think he is our best option this week.

Patterson wont play.

Godfrey is at least aggressive and has pace. He's a terrible footballer though.

Personally I'd have Holgate at RB. He's more secure and defensive minded. But he wont get up the pitch.

Iwobi is going to have to have a blinder agaisnst Fulham.

The RB position needs sorting as a matter of urgency this summer.

I think it's probably going to be Holgate as well Dave, but, that's terribly negative for a must win game. I think I'd go with Patterson or even play Iwobi and McNeill on the right, but, definitely not Godfrey, he just hasn't been at the races since covid and his leg break. His big plus was his pace and athleticism and they just do not seem to be at the same level any more.

RB is one position we cant slip another player into.

Has Iwobi played at RB for us this season? I think he might have or did so during a game.

I'd be tempted to start him there, play Patterson ahead of him and get Garner in midfield.

I like your thinking there Dave, we could definitely use another body in midfield, I haven't seen enough of Garner to be sure, but, the bits I've seen suggest that he has the energy and passing range which could be invaluable in a game where we really need to be creating something. I can't go along with the people who think a draw would be ok on Saturday, we're running out of games to win.
