2024/25 Sean Dyche

Funny because that was not the feeling amongst fans when we were getting spanked 4-1 at Southampton with Unsworth. Koeman accumulated 8pts from 9 games - Allardyce came in and stabilised us then the crowd turned at Burnley when we got beat (the same Burnley who'd beat us earlier in the season at home under Koeman).

Same goes for Silva Lost 9 out of 15 - 14 pts from 15 games - Evertonians wanted his head on a stick after that 5-2 derby defeat.

If they're simply poor starts then can this season not simply be a poor start (11 games played) after doing better last season than we expected (points won wise) and if as you say we have a worse team no surprise we are involved again this season.

If we need to sack a manager every 18 months to get the same players to perform a bit better then that suggests a problem that does not just involve the manager.
Koeman had a tough start that next season think we played the big 6 in the first 8 games, but we went up the league pretty quickly, can’t remember unsworth doing that well apart from his last game v West Ham and then big Sam beat Huddersfield in his first game and we went to 10th or 9th I think and basically stayed in tbe top half for the rest of the season,
Even though the football was dire under big Sam. So no we were never in trouble that season,
The silva one was a bit later knto
The season, but again I don’t think many fans thought we would go down. And it doesn’t really matter if we’re mid table,
Going for the title or relegation fodder loosing 4-1 to Southampton is always going to annoy the fans.

But nothing you say will ever convince me them 2 seasons are similar to this one, nothing

Dyche was a stop gap to keep us up, he’s done his job and can’t take us forward, the football is horrendous and the results are terrible and he’s showing no signs of improvement. Plenty of managers could get more of of this group imo.

Anyway the new owners will move him on pretty sharpish

Tbf, goodison doesn't respond to possession. Goodison responds to aggressive pressing, hard tackles and effort. That doesn't really scream 75% possession
Football has changed a lot.
If we are ever to become a big club we have to footballers in a team that is comfortable in possession.

If you look at the big successful clubs they are all comfortable in possession but they also work harder than everybody else.

Think you will find ( haven’t checked ) that there will be correlation between possession and points. Leicester in 2016 had 40% or around that figure, but that was a bit of a fluke season. They finished 9th the following season.
But most thinks being equal you will get the top teams having the most possession

I'm not sure i'd say it's his 'actual position', he played well there for Sheffield United clearly, but it's not like Dyche is the first manager to use him wide instead. We've had plenty of players in the past who have been moved around to try to get the best out of them, and most attacking players these days don't have an 'actual position' I don't think. I'd like to see him tried in the 10 myself, but I'm not so sure of my own footballing knowledge that i'd go out on a limb saying he would clearly be better there. I'd like to find out, but I accept that I might be wrong.
Unfortunately, Dyche pretty much IS the first manager to use him wide left.

154 matches for club and country
9 on the left.
107 in the middle
38 on the right

His very first time playing on the left in his career was 13 months ago at Marseille. Statistically its his worst position as he gets a goal/assist every 460 minutes. His next worst position is RW, a goal/assist every 290 minutes.

I wouldn't really focus on stats in that context because most of his games wide have come when playing at a higher level (which in itself may not be entirely coincidental). He also clearly can play effectively from the left, so again I don't really see the fact he didn't do it much in the past as an issue at all.

I would like to see him given a go centrally because I think it's worth us trying to shake things up a bit, and I think Dyche's answer in the press conference was unnecessarily combative, I just think it's worth acknowledging that he isn't necessarily an out and out number 10 who we've inexplicably moved elsewhere that's all.

If the manager got sacked at his previous club for winning 4 games in 33 then does that suggest that the problem could involve him?

In a poll that was started on here about 14 months ago, 5% of people wanted Baines, 6.3% wanted Rooney and 7.2% wanted Ste Schumacher.

That's 18.5% of voters in a poll/thread that ran for 139 pages and a little under a year before becoming inactive. Terrifying.
At least one of those would get more than the amount of points Dyche did in the first 11 games.

Amid all this no.10 talk, I'm wondering why he isn't being tried up front.

It sounds like he did better from that position in the Championship than I'd expect DCL or Beto to manage, and he looks well capable of shielding the ball and competing physically against centre-backs.

Probs because all we do is hoof it up the pitch and he's not even 6 foot?
