Transfer Rumour Sean Longstaff

I haven't seen much of this lad at all. All I know is that he was linked with United for a stupid fee a couple of years ago, and now he can't get into a midfield of a team with otherwise pretty crap midfielders. From that I deduce either he's had a bit of a Tom Davies of a career so far where he burst onto the scene and then generally reverted to being poo, or he's a good player who is low on confidence/form, been played out of position or in the wrong system, etc, etc.

What I WILL say is that much has been made, and rightly so, of our expensively-assembled squad "downing tools" for 73 managers in the last 5 years. What if this lad really does want to play for this manager? I get that motivation alone won't turn him into Xavi, but maybe he'll go some way towards being the player United were considering chucking decent money after a little while back?

1. Surely he’s motivated enough playing for his boyhood club?
2. Benitez ain’t gonna be here long

In a world where Rangers 2nd choice RB who has barely played many games in a farmers league is going for near £15 million the days of you being able to sign a Jagielka/Baines for £5 million is long gone mate.

….it actually hasn’t. The aspiration is to build from the top down, otherwise you don’t progress. Gray has been a terrific signing for £1.7m, Richarlison cost Watford £9m, we bought Gueye for £7m.

it’s not easy, but you have to buy quality & not make do with dross.

As I said, I don’t have strong views on Longstaffe but you suggesting he’s not very good but is the best we can do is just wrong. If he’s not very good we shouldn’t be going anywhere near him. If his contract is up, he’ll be demanding a huge signing fee & salary which is something we should only commit to if he’s going to be very effective.

We need to reduce the massive wage bill and get the older, higher paid players out the door in order to invest in new, better players. Longstaff will be better than those he is replacing and save big bucks.
As I said, it’s not ideal but it is needed
I do get what you mean, I just don't think it's what we need.

The whole club and fans are so far apart at the minute, continually signing players this bad isnt gonna bridge the gap, don't see the point in signing players to replace players who never ever start,

Even if delph and gbamin go, we still have doucoure Allan Davies and gomes.

We should he looking to sign a cm that competes to start instead of of next to Allan and doucoure, otherwise we've just wasted more money on another cm that will barely feature

He’s not signing his mates though, he’s signing cheap players he knows in order to get us out of this mess and free up money for better players. Think walcot-Townsend and Gray
Longstaff for delph plus tens of thousands a week will improve us and give money for better players
It’s not ideal, but it’s better than the mess we were/in squad wise
So in other words we're kicking the can down the road building a team we know is crap but hope is good enough to stay up and then when we don't want the crap players anymore we cross that bridge when we come to it. It doesn't sound like a great plan to me.
