Shane MacGowan & The Pogues

I just had the misfortune to watch a 'tribute' to McGowan by a BBC 'arts correspondent', a no mark called David Silleto.

What a mean spirited piece of trash he spewed out.

Typical BBC propaganda.

Rest assured there'll be no obituary tribute for a hank like him when he snuffs it.

I heard that Shane McGowan was due to arrive in a record shop going back 20 years ago in Limerick. I was a huge fan of his and queued up. The queue wasn't overly big though and about 2 hours overdue a taxi pulled up and a few minutes after he rolled and fell out of the taxi his coat covered in hay and an empty bottle of what I presume whiskey fell out onto the street with him. He was helped out and took a seat at a table inside signing autographs. I had brought a Pogues album cover for him to sign with me. The shop owner tried turning me away when I was next in line as I hadn't bought the new album to get signed (I was still in school and hadn't the money) Shane McGowan overheard this and told me to come over anyway and handed him the album cover to sign. He asked me what my name was and my name being Shane aswel he signed it and handed it back to me with his drunken smile. Outside I read it and it simply read "from Shane to Shane"
Even though how absolutely pissed he was he was an absolute gent and some hell of a character.
So in turn il say, to Shane from Shane, May You Rest In Peace and your music live on forever

Around 1997 I was enjoying a camping tour of Ireland in my open top MG Midget, heading for me ma's home town. I wasn't long divorced and I'd recently discovered his song "her father didn't like me anyway " which at one point he finishes the chorus woth a forceful... c&@×t"

I enjoyed playing over and over, very loudly, singing along with the chorus. I tell ye - I got some looks from the auld biddies sat outside the pub by the traffic lights of a small village when that c word was shouted out!

Love this song and the album it's from The Snake, one of my favourite albums. The song was written by Gerry Rafferty and I agree, Shane's version is a belter.
