Shortage of strikers could cost us, warns Phil Jagielka

Everton FC's current lack of strikers could be costly in their bid for the top four, fears Phil Jagielka.

The Toffees created a string of chances during their 1-0 defeat by Tottenham at White Hart Lane but were unable to convert any of them.

A solitary second half goal by Emmanuel Adebayor saw the Londoners eventually overtake Everton in fifth place, and left Roberto Martinez’s men five points off Liverpool in fourth spot.

With January loan recruit Lacina Traore not considered fit for action despite being included among the substitutes, and Romelu Lukaku also sidelined for another fortnight, skipper Jagielka rued the lack of cutting edge which undermined their dominant opening 45 minutes.

The 31-year-old said: “We’re struggling a little bit at the moment. Lacina is not quite right yet and it’s difficult because although we played some good stuff we were perhaps missing that fox in the box or target man to get us the goal. It’s frustrating and at the least we should probably have kept a clean sheet and come away with 0-0 but we didn’t.

“It’s going to be a little bit harder for us now, there are other teams in the mix for fourth.

“If we’d beat Spurs we’d have pushed on a little bit, but there’s still 13 games left and a lot of points to play for.

“A lot of teams are trying to get as many points as they can for one reason or another and we’ve got a lot of hard games too. We’ve got a tough one coming up against Palace.”

Tottenham’s goal came in controversial circumstances after referee Mark Clattenburg allowed Kyle Walker to take it quickly 10 yards from where the foul was given, and ignored a dubious challenge on Leon Osman in the build-up.

“We had the better chances on the day but we were so frustrated with the goal,” said Jagielka. “It looks as if Ossie was fouled before it and then everything happened so quickly and it was a case of was he or wasn’t he onside?

“It was a great finish though and you can’t take that away from Adebyaor. We didn’t take our own chances and we were punished for it.”

Everton were at least able to welcome the return of influential right-back Seamus Coleman, and on-loan Barcelona starlet Gerard Deulofeu, even if the latter was unable to help them grab a point during his second half cameo from the bench.

“Gerry has been looking good in training but it’s difficult to come into a game when you’ve been out for a while,” said Jagielka.

“Maybe the time he had will benefit him in the weeks ahead and he’ll be a game changer for us in his next game.

“I’m just so disappointed to have lost. We needed to get at least a draw because us and Spurs are competing for fourth. The next week will be very important now and we need to keep our confidence going, play like we did in the first half, and score the goals when we get the chances.”

Surely its a bit late now Jags? Maybe you should have said something 2 weeks ago MATE.

Yes, because Jagielka saying something 2 weeks ago would have caused Martinez to go and buy a striker. I agree with your point that we should have invested in a backup. However, 2 weeks ago, Lukaku wasn't injured. There's little point in making Jagielka a scapegoat - him saying something would have changed nothing.

I'd say it's a bit worrying if a premier league scouting network can't identify one suitable option up front ahead of Naismith.

But hey, you carry on supporting this whole 'go with what we've got' thing . It worked last season...

They did lad, they brought in traore to be primary backup, figuring until the lukaku would keep carrying the load obviously, then 3 days before the window the plan gets screwed by lukaku getting injured, blame them for not bringing in a fit striker instead of traore (although likely inferior player to traore), or blame him for thinking that kev would do well up front - curiously been forgotten how many on here were shouting out that kev could play up top now ofc as usual.

And if you think for a second im a defender of the board mate your blinder than i thought, and yup we should have strengthened in jan in midfield as goi.g into the window and we still are 1 injury away from bad things, but all the striker QQ is getting silly

You want me to go through other teams squads and pick their 4th choice striker? For what gain? Im talking about Everton, Martinez said we would need to replace Kone and Gibson short term, he "replaced" Kone, to a degree, if you consider loaning an injured striker as replaced, I personally dont, but he hasnt "replaced" Gibson, but then guess what else he did, he sold a Striker, then the only fit Striker in the squad got injured.

Would be great if you could let me know when that situation happened at any of the other top teams?

My complaints are more than valid, I mean Jags has just basically vindicated them, so argue with him if you want.

Point abounot replacing gibbos a valid one, and mate if you think we can carry 5 strikers on the books whilst we play one up front then im baffled, if lukaku hadnt been injured we wouldnt even be talking about it, and we arent in the situation mate were we can replace players with 4-6 week injuries

In the run up to the Jan transfer window people forget Rom had,nt been pulling up any trees for weeks.

True. Wasn't fully satisfied with the traore signing because of his injury, and lukaku's lack of form. We needed someone in form to step in straight away. Lukaku's injury just made things even worse.

Posted this in another thread, but it fits better here...

Lukaku was on a Belgian talkshow tonight. He said Everton wanted him to play coming weekend (not the game against Crystal Palace), but the physio - Lieven Maesschalk, world famous - said he's not ready yet. So no Lukaku for at least 2 more games...

I am sure that RM sees Everton as a long term project, rather than just a quick fix. It will probably take him two or maybe even three seasons to build the squad that he can truly call his own.
That will also tell us conclusively what many of us believe.....that we are at the beginning of something special in our clubs history.

I don't believe that RM is a puppet for anybody,I don't believe that he would make himself look foolish just to make Bill Kenwright and the board look well....why should he ?
David Moyes made a career out of telling us how little money he had to spend at Everton and it didn't seem to damage his relationship with the board.

I choose to believe RM when he said that he has money available to spend and that January is not a good market to operate in.
The summer market will tell us what transfer funds are available.

Whereas I want Everton to win every game, I cannot help but feel that a season or two of development under RM could help us better to cope with the demands of mixing European football with our domestic commitments.I think we have looked somewhat jaded since mid December and Lukaku in particular badly needed the rest that was forced on him by injury, the same is true of Coleman,Distin,Baines,Jagielka,Barkley and Pienaar.

We are unlucky to have three long term injuries together in Gibson,Kone and Oviedo and I think the absence of Gibson and Kone have really been felt in recent weeks.

I think we probably need to add as many as five quality players to our squad to enable us to compete in Europe, more if we can't get loans. Hopefully one or two will come through from the academy, but putting a squad together will take time in the absence of City-esque spending power.

What about replacing season long injured 1s, with you know, maybe a non injured 1.

If Lukaku hadnt been injured, if we hadnt sold Jelavic, if Kone didnt get injured, if we didnt loan an injured striker, I admit, it wouldnt be a problem.

This seasons strikers have been:

Lukaku

Was great until around December when he hit a dip in form and lacked that cutting edge he had in previous games

Naismith

Scored against Chelsea giving us an impressive win, has played well when called upon and has really worked hard in every game he's played. Done a good job against Spurs on Sunday too.

Mirallas

Plays better behind the striker IMO but can do a job as a CF, just needs to watch that offside trap and bring players into the game instead of playing solo at times

Jelavic

Gutted he's gone still. I thought he could've been a useful handful against Liverpool and Spurs.

Kone

All I can remember is him
Hitting the post from two yards out against Hull.

Have I missed anyone?

Why not give Deulofeu a go up top? He'll be well supported and will put defenders on the Back foot, other players will be around him and could create chances. Worth a go I say.

Martinez claims Traore has rare ability for someone who's 6'8. Give him time against Palace.

We have a lot of attacking minded players, If only we had someone to bury these chances.

Shane Long was an opportunity missed.

The one point i will agree on is that we should have loaned someone who.was bloody well fit mate, its plain to see that martinez gambled on.the fact lukaku looked like someone immune to injury, badly misjudged and sods law soon as traore arrived he broke down. After traore arrived though we were screwed as we couldnt loan another, and to spend money at that point would have seen a jela/anichebe/long type quality for 6-7m, long term not good business if martinez is looking long term.

If summer doesnt see a lukaku or benteke like incoming on a permanent deal then my trust in martinez will greatly diminish as ive said previously in.other threads

If we manage to get Europe, literally scraping it, we have to strengthen. Europa league is most realistic but CL is still achievable.

If we fail to qualify for Europe this season I would be very disappointed and would have to look to why we never strengthened in January when there was clearly money available to do so.

Why not give Deulofeu a go up top?

This happened, that happened.

No other top four contender would have allowed this situation to developed during a transfer window. I just can't imagine it.

No doubt about it. Probably not the long-term answer that Bob has in mind, but if we were going to sell Jelavic just do do him a favour in a World Cup year (nicely spun Roberto), and Long was available for the same money, it would have been an ideal swap at no extra cost.

But then again as we are a such "well run football club" that we have to find at least £5m a year for the bank it probably wasn't such a good idea after all.
