Shortage of strikers could cost us, warns Phil Jagielka

You're suggesting a manager wouldn't rather get a "name" player in than an unknown?

It's a built in excuse. If the player does poorly, you can say "well, he was widely touted" or "He has a proven track record"

You bring someone in without a reputation and then all the spotlight goes on you if it goes pete tong

I don't actually think Traore has a better reputation in this country than Shane Long, tbh.

But regardless this is Everton not Chelsea, our best player this season cost 60k from Sligo, that kind of pressure for big names just isn't there.

Real Madrid absolutely fall into the trap of just buying a 60 million player to look ambitious regardless of what they actually need as a team, Everton really don't. I just can't see either Martinez turning down an unfashionable lower league player cos the fans demand a flair name player instead.

The main reason I can't see that is cos we've bought in three players from wigan, gareth barry and an ex celtic winger playing in russia since Martinez came in.

And the fans don't even demand for us to spend any money at all.

Here's a crazy thought gents..

Perhaps Roberto was correct when he said we had plenty of money. Perhaps he was also correct when he said that he didn't like dealing in January, correct that the 'right' players weren't available, and correct that he chose not to spend now and save it for the summer...

... and perhaps Kenwright/the board will actually, you know, let our manager spend this money? Because, let's face it, as many detractors as they have amongst our fanbase they obviously aren't that stupid.

Well but we've heard this a lot of times, before is the thing.

We've been told repeatedly that our manager would have money to spend and then it never gets spent.

At this moment it's up to the board to prove Martinez has money to spend. I no longer take it solely on faith.

I'm going to do the logical thing and wait until the summer I think.

I'm not being funny, but you'd be daft to think that Roberto would just spunk money away in his first January window at the club, regardless of the position we're in.

I think we're more used to hearing we've got next to bugger all on a regular basis tbh, it's generally us that decide we're going to hope it's a ruse & we'll spend big instead.

Martinez has been quite clear on this, if come the summer we spend next to nothing net again, then serious questions need to be asked, given the revenue increase, combined with the transfer surplus he's created in the last 2 windows. But merely speculating on it now & casting aspersions on Martinez's character in the process isn't fair imo.

Is it still being logical to go chase after the wolf every time, like?

Surely pattern recognition has to set in at some point?

Getting a striker on loan would hardly have required him to empty the accounts if we've got money to spend.

Martinez brought in two attack minded players for very little money, given he was quoted as not being a fan of the January window that's as much as we could have expected. We could have gone with the Spurs model and bought some very expensive players(some of whom were touted on this very forum as nearly guaranteed world beaters) and not played them

... and he got one. Traore.

It's quite obvious that he hedged his bets on Lacina coming in and being available in the run-in til the end of the season. As chico said earlier, Lukaku got injured right at the end of the window, something he didn't forsee, but in the end he's ultimately decided that, for what was available, it wasnt worth trying to loan another striker just to do us for another handful of games. How many other decent strikers would've been available to us at the end.of the window anyway?

Either way, these decisions were made by the manager - not the board.

We signed three players on deadline day in the summer. If you honestly think we couldn't have got somebody in then fair enough.

We'll wait till the summer, like we did last year. Worked out well then...

We'll find out come the summer if the manager has any funs, like.

I know when I criticised the lack of backing Martinez got in the last summer, I was told to wait til January and he'd spend then. And when I had a go at us not buying anyone last january, I was told the Fer bid proved we had money that we would spend the following summer.

I think it's questionable to think this is the logical point of view at the moment. At the very least, I wouldn't argue with someone who felt that they've heard this time and again and won't believe the club or the manager until the pattern changes.
