Should players be sent off for wasting time .

It just doesn't take that long to take a throw. His team weren't helping by giving opportunities, but that was just taking the mick.
You don’t get sent off “for taking the mick”, you get sent off for gaining an advantage by breaking the rules, if the referee has the power to add on that time at the end of the half where is the advantage. If the opposition kick the ball out of play the resultant throw in is how you get the ball back. If referees are going to book you after a few seconds then it in in the opposition’s interest to kick it out. The referee has to remember why he gave the throw in the first place.

I think the ref forgot he'd already been booked then bricked it when the Swiss surrounded him for the red. His face scrunches up. No going back then.

I just watched Jamal Lewis being sent off while playing for Northern Ireland yesterday. He got a second yellow for wasting time after 36 minutes of the first half. After I finished playing I refereed for a short while. I always told teams that if they wasted time I would add it on and I would be quite generous with the time to be added on. Generally it done the trick.
Sending a player off, particularly in the first half, for time wasting when you are the arbitrator of the amount of time to be played annoys the life out of me.
When you put it like that then, No...The Reff should be sacked for being an idiot

You make a fair point, but we don't know what the ref told the teams before kick off about how he'd handle time wasting.

To me its cheating and I hate to see cheating. Yes he can add on the time, but if the rules say its bookable its up to the player who has already been booked not to be a moron about it.

Should just do what they do in rugby, award a free kick and move the ball forward ten yards.

It`s part of teams like Burnley`s game plan and it kills the game, which is what they want.

The fact he was being a tit and putting himself at risk of a second yellow is entirely on the player.
Can't blame the ref for doing his job
This.
Timewasting is a bookable offence which every professional footballer knows, if he is stupid enough to timewaste after having previously been booked then he and anyone else should not be surprised if he gets sent off regardless what minute of the game it is.
Why are we discussing this it's straightforward to me.

Its stupid but I don't think the ref was wrong, either. Refs on televised games can't just add on another 15 minutes like you could at an ordinary match. Better they try to keep the game flowing and the ball in play, so booking players for doing it is fine imo. I do think its a little harsh and should probably be replaced with giving the throw to the other team, like a foul throw, instead of a second yellow if the player would get one.

Here it is :

The defender is acres of space there. I get that he may have wanted a more attacking option to show itself but whether intentional or not he is certainly wasting everyone's time.

I think time wasting should either be a yellow card or a reverse decision. So if GK messing about with goal kick it should be changed to a corner for the opposition. I also think any player apart from the captain who approaches an official over a decision should receive a yellow card. They both spoil enjoyment of the game.

Time wasting (usually) could be cut out quite easily. Burnley after 10 minutes were time wasting. The ref didn't book them (then again, he didn't book attempts of GBH either).

All it takes is a strong ref to book players and especially keepers after warning them. Unfortunately in the PL, we have "rules". No bookings for time wasting until after 70 mins and no bookings for blatant fouls until after 10 mins.

For me, time wasting should be dealt with like this:

Player clearly is time wasting - Ref warns them.
Player does it again - Yellow card
Player does it again - Red card.

What really annoys me is when a player gives a free kick away and picks up the ball then walks away with it before throwing it back in the general direction of the free kick taker or just drops it as he walks away, really ****** me off that. You give a free kick away then pick up the ball you have absolutely no need to touch that bloody ball, straight red and three match ban, that'll learn 'em!
