Not only is Fellaini about four years older than Rodwell, he also had two seasons of football, week in week out before joining us from Standard Liege. Rodwell doing it differently and will come through at a different pace given the strength in depth we already have in that position, and the strength of the League. As someone mentioned in another thread, Beckham wasn't a regular at Utd until he was 21-22, and there's lots of examples of players coming through at different paces. Steven Gerrard was hardly pulling up trees at that age, neither was Arteta.
I'd also point out that Rodwell has been playing in midfield for what, three years? He was a centre back right up until the age of 15-16, and that's where all his development took place. Now he's playing defensive midfield, attacking midfield and even wide at times. It's a huge learning curve and you have to take it into account. Anyone who saw him at Blackburn on his debut and watched him now would see the amount of improvement he's made.
I just look at his raw tools, the size, the athleticism, the fact that he's probably the most two footed player in the League, the close control and his ability to strike the ball. The things you mention can be taught and improved on. Positional sense, movement, agression and having the confidence to fully express himself is what's his lacking, it's not like he lacks pace, ability or intelligence. This isn't a talent who will drift into the lower Leagues, it just won't happen.
I agree that he shouldn't be ahead of Fellaini or Arteta but I think he could easily play in Cahill's position and do well. He hit the post against Chelsea and could have had a couple against Wigan during his recent run in the side. He does get into good positions, and that was from a deeper position. He can also do things like he did against the Manchester clubs last season.
But I do agree that It might come to the point where we have to sell him or another prized asset. The team needs strengthening and we'll struggle to do that with loans and bargain basement signings.
You make them points but Felli broke in to a good, championship winning side at the age of 18 and became a regular and played alongside some good players in Defour, Witsel and Dalmat, a side that did very well against the sheit and us, do you think an 18 year old Rodwell would of broke into that side, cos i dont.
And the points you make about Beckham, Gerrard and are very own Arteta, Beckham was in an around the United 1st team at the age of 18, 19 and was doing well and then he got that goal at Wimbledon and he kicked on in leaps and bounds, Gerrard at 18, 19 and 20 was a better talent than Rodwell and was showing it aswell and Arteta at that age was playing for PSG with the likes of Ronaldinho and then moved to the SPL and tore it a new en at such a young age (i know what you'll say about the SPL but it was of a better standard back then, him and Larsson was definitely the 2 best players in that league at the time!), we signed him when he was 22, 23 and im sorry, but all those at Rodwells age was better and got even better!.
Now im not saying Rodwell wont get better cos he will but i just dont think he'll become as good as what some of you think, i just dont see it, you say in time he will improve on certain aspects of his game but he's been involved and trained with the first team, with the likes of Arteta, Pienaar, Felli, Saha and co, very good technically gifted footballers which by now you would of thought he'd of took some of the things they do on board and improved but i just dont think he as, i see the same things from him season in, season out.
And them moments your talking about in games versus City and United, Chelsea this season and Wigan, even Sigma in Europe at home when he got 2 goals, one a belter in off the bar, to me, hasnt given him the confidence or platform to kick on and be better, hence why i said summat about Beckham scoring from the half way line at Wimbledon, he did that and basically kicked on and became a superstar, he never looked back, Rodwell as these odd moments a season and doesnt seem to kick on and get better or produce more of it on a consistant basis for me, one defining moment in a game doesnt make a player or suggest he will be world class in the future, doing it loads of times and on a consistant basis makes you what you are for me and players like Beckham and Gerrard are and was world class players cos from the ages of 20 plus up and up until there 30's and over, they performed to an high level and made huge contributions week in, week out.
Everyones entitled to there own opinion but i just dont see Rodwell in the same light as most of you lot, i do think he will become a good player but just not the world class player some of you lot think he will become in time, i just dont see it. If he was so good then he would be starting games in midfield ahead of a out of form Arteta wouldnt he, cos Moyes as admitted himself Arteta is out of form but yet sticks to having him in the side and having Rodwell on the bench, Cahill goes away with Australia and you'd of thought he might get more of a look in then but Moyes opted to play 4-4-2 and no place in the side for Rodwell. At the end of the day, with our current squad of players, we have already got better players in the positions Rodwell can play in.
