I'm finding that the site flicks and changes from being incredibly slow (almost not accessible), to workable and back to normal in a short period of time.

Are visitor numbers consistent?

Same here.

Yes. Traffic is very modest. From 12-3 today was me patching the site - but this evening and yesterday evening is a mystery.

Happens at 18:00 to about 18:10 Pacific everyday. Backing up I think. So like 23 minutes ago for me. 02:00 Ingerland time.

Definitely takes longer than 2 minutes for the site to behave normal. The New Posts feature takes at least 10-15 minutes to function properly. I suppose that also is a newish thing since the upgrade BTW.

When backing up?

No correlation between upgrade and server stability - the upgrade reduced size and is more optimised across the board. Think the speed/instability is just us needing to migrate server to a new one, it was a recycled one back in 2014 so it's getting on a little bit.
