My wife has just been diagnosed with a prolapsed disc in her back. She has been in agony and crying with the pain. The doctor keeps changing her tablets around but nothing seems to work. Just wondering if anyone has any advice to give cheers.

I’ve had back problems for a few years now due to worn discs. Unfortunately the pain won’t go away quickly. It took about 2 months before the worst of the pain subsided and another 5 months to disappear. It comes and got now but the pain isn’t as bad as the first bout I had.
As for pain relief I too have tried them all. I would stay clear of gabapentin and amytriptyline as they mess with your mind. I stuck to naproxen and painkillers. ?

I feel sorry for her I really do, I am on Naproxen and Zapain as I slipped my disc way back in Sept 2019, it took 28 sessions with a chiropractor (18 paid for £840 and 10 on a private scheme with work) to get the pain under control. Unfortunately its gone again big style, going for a Mri scan next Wednesday to see what can be done privately on the works health scheme.

As someone who has a dodgy back I sympathise.
Sawdust isn't an option and the fridge overnight will just give her a cold.
What about a chiropractor ?
I recently had sciatica and she manipulated my back better.
I was lucky enough that my employer paid for the treatment, and at about £60 a session, I was lucky.
Good luck.
I’ve got sciatica, had it for over 4 years now and had to learn to live with it sadly… I still manage to go hill walking, ride my bike and play footy once a week…. I do sometimes take naproxen which helps a little …. I did however recently make things worse though at flip out when I fell awkwardly on a trampoline… I guess being 46 doesn’t help either

Many years ago I had a really bad back. Went to see an Osteopath and limped in, walked out. On a couple of subsequent occasions I had to go again, same result. Mind you, it was something 'out of alignment' and pressing on the sciatic nerve and he was able to click it back into place. Made your eyes water but only for a few minutes and was well worth it. Hope your good lady gets it sorted. Not nice, totally debilitating.

Thanks for that . She has actually had about 4 sessions with a chiropractor but after about a day the pain came back. She is hoping to have some physio shortly and is going on stronger tablets today but thanks anyway Al your advice is much appreciated. ?

I got a chair from ikea called a poang. It really helped with my posture whilst sitting down as my suite chairs are really low and not great for sitting upright.

I have the same mate, it’s horrible. No tablets have ever worked for me either. Mine is a lot less painful now just from doing physio exercises as much as possible (morning/afternoon/night time), with smaller exercises throughout the day.

As a stop gap I’d use a CBD roll on. I was at a point where I could barely get in and out of my car, but using that could then workout/play football. Not that I’d suggest doing that as she’ll just make herself worse without knowing. I stay pain free for about 2 hours after using.
