Slow start

I had thought that us playing Preston and American sides in pre-season had left us under-prepared, while our rivals were in summer tournaments against the likes of Ajax and Inter. But we did have some more competitive games last summer with the same result.

If I was Davey the next thing I would try would be to start the season with a couple of kids in the team. They would be hungry, enthusiastic and would give 100% to try and impress. We'd be able to give old pros at clubs like Bolton and Blackburn a wake up call. It's the same principle why clubs like Hull, Blackpool and Swansea start so brightly. It's new to them and they're an unknown quantity, which makes life difficult for the opposition. We could rotate in the likes of Barkley, Vellios, Baxter and McAleney.

Give them a couple of months and then pull them out of the side again. Stalwarts like Neville, Cahill and Distin will be well-rested by this point and keen to step in and see us through the difficult winter period. Hopefully the knock on effects are that it would extend their careers and reduce the likelihood of injury.

The other area which possibly contributes to our slow start is a lack of goal-setting. Moyes always says that he plays the games and sees where it takes them. At this stage of the season the players can see for themselves what there is to play for and the effort required to reach it but, in August, they possibly drift along and don't worry too much about defeats. Maybe Moyes needs to set them a monthly points target if they want to reach the Europa League? In that case, if we lose at home to QPR we know that we need to put extra effort into the next game to recoup the points. Would players like Osman, Fellaini and Rodwell not gamble on getting forward more often or shooting from distance if they had a goals target too?

Moyes should buy them all Christmas presents in August. Maybe that'll confuse their body clocks.

There is a reason for our continued slow starts to be honest.

The disarray in the club because of the rumours of players being sold, Moyes fuming about the lack of funds and the boards continued inept work of running the club.

It's no coincidence that we started the season excellently when we had all our transfer business done before pre season basically and had no real issues at the club regarding players leaving or such like, in 2006/2007.

good thread, billy...don't mind the forum police (who have forgotten how to be funny and instead just troll threads).

The slow-start syndrome is our biggest problem. Moyes definitely hasn't found the answers and he believes he's tried everything, so maybe he should try some of your suggestions.

Correct.

Your 2nd point though is my answer, without a doubt.

yeah facepalming that is ridiculous..

slow starts is a definite puzzler, its been discussed a number of times on here and no-ones come up with a definitive answer

I would imagine he's old school running them into the ground pre season they always look shagged out with teams dancing round 'em taking till xmas when we get a second wind.

I'd be having a word with the Spurs conditioning guys Pienaar looks faster and more energised, a vastly improved player for his stay at totters.

How many games did he play for spurs this season?

Because the only important thing in the first half of the season is keeping it tight , defend deep, just get rid type football taking no risks and making sure there are no expectations come Christmas of actually achieving anything (ala spurs).

Then when it looks like we've picked up enough points to not be relegated we can actually play decent confident football.

Its the way we play in the first half of the season. If we had played Fulham and Sunderland at home in October we wouldn't of played such confident nice effective passing football.

We'd have sat back in a amateur attempt at keeping a clean sheet and hoofed balls up front to Jelavic with Cahill fouling people whilst being offside.

I've never bought into this idea that the pre-season matters that much. It's more that we're so nervous and defensive, I think. We lose the first game and we just lose our confidence. Bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.

At the start of the season there is expectation.

We play poorly.

Then there is no expectation.

We play well.
