Boycott won't solve anything, do they actually think the racists will get upset that their club/players don't post on social media for a few days/weeks ? I think they might be overvaluing their influence if they think this approach is going to make racist people think twice about abusing people.

The only way you manage to stop or significantly cut down on some people being racist online is by removing all anonymity from the internet and forcing people to use real IDs which is never going to happen for numerous reasons.

Whilst I feel for Ian Wright and other players who get this crap sent to them I don't think they understand that there is no realistic or viable way of stopping it... all the social media giants can do is remove objectively racist comments or ban said users which they already do the majority of the time.

What are they expecting from these companies ? They cant stop people sending racist personal messages, all they can do is police it better after the messages have been sent.

It's like pushing water uphill with a fork.....Feel like it isn't an effective way, just a bunch of people virtue signalling. If you want change, just look at what happened during the superleague debacle..... The people at the top aren't that interested when it comes to racism, they'll only be interested when it seriously hits them in the pocket.....

For me, you should have to be identified and verified before you can access these site.

If you hide behind a profile, you are not responsible for what you say or post.

Credit Card/Bank Account to open an account for one person so you can get rid of a lot of the spam bots.

They also to be more responsive for key words and use technology to find abuse quicker.

Also what is the concequences if this cowardly behaviour - fine, community service, jail. They have to be clear.

Agreed, I don't go along with this big brother is watching you crap.
If me showing my driving license or anything else to identify myself gets rid of these scumbags then I'm all for it.

The trouble is though, they will manifest their evil somewhere else.

I have enjoyed it.

It's like when you finally ditch your FB account and realise after a few days you don't miss it.

Same with Twitter, I used to be on it a lot but again realised during this boycott that it is 95% rubbish.

I hope it continues. Indefinitely.

Heard about the boycott a few days ago but didn’t think much of it - don’t use social media so probably a bit in the dark.

Horrified watching that video. Will a boycott have any impact? Can the platforms do more to stop this?

This is my thinking. I'd rather know that a person is a racist moron by what they say, than he left wondering as they hide away what an idiot they are.

If we start limiting free speech in any way, or accept these social media companies having power to pick and choose opinions, its absolutely wrong.

The racism is abhorrent- no argument. But who are these corporations to decide morals for us (and later no doubt politics).

Accountability to the law is the only significant solution. Every 'handle' or Internet persona should be linked to a name and address accessible by the law (given a warrant).

Equally make cyclists carry a registration plate so that when they hit cars or ignore road laws they too can be traced. Accountability to EXISTING laws is all thats needed. We shouldn't have this used as an excuse to hand away further freedoms.
