Space and Stuff : It's Big

So on the other side of the world from the Greenwich meridian, roughly along the date line, the western hemisphere is to their east.

Sounds a very nonsense phrase that!
Almost as if the prime meridian starts at 0 and ends at 180 degrees (antimeridian).

It is what it is, it's nothing new, and I'd expect an educator to know this like :hayee:

To a geographer such nonsense is prime curriculum material. To a scientist I just see it as meaningless nonsense words.

Oh how I used to love winding up geography teachers! 😁

Bet they were fuming about your lack of knowledge x

Realistically I can see why it's not as used in layman's terms, but to say it's nonsense is just, well, nonsense. How do you think coordinates work and are used?

Visual representations on a Mercator projection as a coordinate system, (x, y), and how to find coordinates based on it. Pretty scientific, I'd like to point out :)

If there were an east pole and a west pole then it would make sense .... if there was anything significant about them like, you know, being near an axis of rotation, or some focus for magnetism.

Science is about understanding or making sense of the universe. Geography is about drawing a surface sketch of one planet, and scribbling man-made lines on it.

Let me know how you'd do a coordinate system on the map above only using one axis mate, and how that'd affect GPS coordinates overall.

The equator is also a made up drawing line, but it separates the hemispheres the same way.

My point is that north and south are absolutes based on the axis of rotation and/or magnetic poles. East and west are relative terms based on the position of the observer, or an arbitrary line drawn through the British admiralty hq.

Yeah, that's why they change and are not sitting on the made-up manmade line of the axis, which if you look at from space makes even less sense and only makes sense on our tiny field of understanding.

Space is Big. That's a bold statement, I assume you have evidence?
