We'd rather throw money at private companies and watch them f#%$ things up.

What do NASA do these days? It seems most satellites are privately made, and launched by all sorts of countries. Manned flight is off the agenda, the shuttles are retired.![]()

Curiosity, the Mars rover from a couple of years ago, is still ongoing. They're also launching a new crew module (the Orion) next month that'll be capable of long-distance manned space flight.
Leftovers from the Constellation program, which was supposed to be a return to the moon by 2020. The program itself was axed in 2010, but bits and pieces live on here and there.
