Watching a video in regards to the moon landings, or generally about why we have never gone back to the moon. In genuine NASA interviews over the decades they have actually said

1. They have lost all the data from the moon landings despite having a huge storage area for such things

2. They don't have the technology anymore to go back to the moon

3. Other data was deleted to save storage space (can't remember what, and multi billion dollar company NASA trying yo save money?)

NASA is a government operation. Hence the main reason they haven't gone back to the moon -- back in the 1960s it was a goal to beat the Russians in the Cold War, today the U.S. government doesn't have the stomach to spend billions on going back. So if man is to expand his exploration in space, it will almost certainly be up to the private sector. Yesterday showed it can be done.

Excuse my self proclaimed ignorance here but ...what is the point of NASA if they aren't going to be the ones exploring space?

Sorry to sound pessimistic but why is launching a car into space such an achievement?
Launching the car isn't the achievement, it is the rocket that did it.

It is the 2nd most powerful rocket ever after the Saturn V. Normally they just heft a concrete block into space for the test launch as they don't want to rush a real payload. So Musk, decided to do it with a bit of style and send his personal car as the ballast.

The reason it is all special, is that this rocket is capable of sending humans to Mars. It won't though, as it will be soon superceded by SpaceX's BFR rocket (and potentially NASA's SLS).

There is limited potential with the moon, for the money required to be invested, and as NASA are on a relative shoestring of a budget, they are focusing on things other than the moon.

Did I see that right?

The booster like parked itself next to the take off support thing?
Perspective.....

The landed on specially designed landing pads, with nothing in close proximity in case the landing doesn't go right and things go boom. They certainly do not land on the launch pad (although it is 'nearby')

Still pretty impressive mind. The video looked like it reversed parked in the car park!
