Everything post-Return nof the Jedi in the timeline of the expanded universe is null and void now anyway.

There is an amazing game called Knights of the Old Republic, set before the films, which I'd encourage anyone to play.

Don't get me wrong, the Expanded Universe started out great - The first sequel trilogy of books (the "Thrawn Trilogy" by Timothy Zahn) were fantastic, and really felt like Star Wars. Over the years, though, as you got dozens upon dozens of new books continuing the story, it turned into a convoluted mess in my opinion. As of now, the only things that are canon are a) the films, b) the "Clone Wars" TV show, C) the current "Rebels" TV show, and D) any *new* books released through Disney. I think the only one so far is one about Grand Moff Tarkin, set before the original film.
