What is the thinking here? "Chinese people love Storm troopers, but hate wookies and rebel pilots?"

One of the things noted in all of those Sony memos that were leaked last year was that there's a belief in Hollywood that Asian audiences are racist. I've read that Boyega was de-emphasized (and BB-8 bigged up) in the Chinese poster because somebody thought "Chinese don't like black people but love robots." It's ridiculous sounding, but I can absolutely see some Hollywood marketing guy thinking that way.

Ethnic Asians are the most racist people on the planet. You'd be completely shocked as to what they actually think of everyone else.

On the left is the British poster and the right the Chinese poster FFS

Vomit. That has a put a damper on my rising Star Wars fever TBH. Obviously I'm going to see it in theatre on release but I think I'll leave my repeated viewings for at home and keep my theatre money.

It's a real shame because I think quite a few changes in public opinion on certain issues (including race) have been driven in part by a liberal Hollywood (and music industry also largely in LA) which shoved diversity down the throats of a lot of bigots over the years. Not saying that was all it took but it played a role. Sci-Fi (moreso Star Trek but still) has often been on the front line and an early adopter of diversity.

Don't kid yourselves: If they are willing to take someone off a poster (or diminish them) for China they are willing to not cast someone because of their race for China.

While the english speaking western markets are far from perfect they aren't doing it because of our markets. We should not in any way shape or form respect other culture's "right" to be racist, sexist or homophobic. In fact I think the idea we don't complain more about these issues in Asia and the Middle East is racist in and of itself. If I tried to buy Everton tomorrow and it came out I was a massive homophobe and sexist who contributed millions to hate groups that murdered homosexuals and women -- oh and I also have a pretty significant slavery project on the go too! -- I imagine it would merit a mention in the media. It could very possibly mean I wouldn't be allowed to buy the team (there is precedent for this in the sports world); while if I did buy the team people would probably mention that stuff frequently when discussing me and the team. And yet ...

I was getting excited for this, but recently every advert on TV for every bloody product like cheese strings has a star Wars theme.

Disney are going to milk our childhood film franchise till we beg them to stop, just stop it Mickey you heartless mouse. Stop bumming the ATAT's, just stop it.
