Steven Naismith though.

Van Nistelrooy as well. Added hardly anything to a game, almost to a point of laziness, apart from slotting copious number of balls away from within the area.

Now I'm in no way suggesting Naismith is another Ruud, however he unquestionably contributes to our game either through his work rate or the goals he scores. He may not be the most technical player in the world but the results are what's important. Three of our seven goals this season are Naismith's.

Right. And I wasn't comparing him to Van Basten. Only saying that Van Basten was an exceptional player but knew how to score.

Naismith looks so far like he knows how to score. That was the analogy I was attempting.

This.

He's just different class when all's said and done. In fact, it's unfair on Naismith to compare him with Barkley. Barkley, as mentioned, shifts the whole momentum of a game: the Derby last season at Goodison being a case in point. The pick up from centre circle to edge of box is terrifying and has opponents defences ALWAYS wary of what he'll do.

I absolutely agree. They're two different players in terms of skill set and their approach to how they attack the final third.

wasn't utds trophy count actually quite poor, by their standards at the time, with ruud in the side, top slotter no doubt, but maybe an everton/lineker scenario

Only won 1 league title in 5 years which is incredible considering he scored 150 goals in 219 games. he was ridiculously good.

that is some record, i do wonder about the effect of playing to someone who slots and only slots, when we had lineker his record was insane, but everybody elses tailed off, having said that if big nev hadn't got injured it probably wouldn't even be an argument

I understand what you were attempting to say and I was agreeing with your sentiments, as expanded below.

I don't think you can directly relate his individual return and their trophy rate. However, as you mentioned his return was splendid. I cannot remember the exact figures, but I am sure in all the goals he scored only a handful were from outside the box. His other play was non-existent.

However, if a striker is scoring goals then it is to some degree fickle to question what else they're providing to a game as that's their role.

Hence my analogy of comparing Ruud in some forms to Naismith. From the end of last season and continuing this year Naismith is scoring goals.

He may not be the most clinical player. He may not be flashy. He IS scoring goals though unlike some other players.

His attitude is top rate as well. Basically, I like Naismith.

He has plenty of fight in him as well does naismith, even on an off day, it was more of a question to throw out there regards ruud vn rather than a theory I hold

Probably our most impressive attacking play last season came against Arsenal at home, the attacking 3?............Naisy, Barkley and Lukaku. Of course they can play together and probably will.
