Stewards at Old trafford

I noticed the stewards at Old trafford this year have a weird routine, and I can't recall noticing it at any other grounds! Everytime the ball is in play, all the stewards round the pitch sit down, but the when play stops, whether it's a throw in free kick etc they all stand up and move about a metre towards the pitch, and when play resumes they sit back down! Anyone know why they do this? Or am I just imagining it!?

As a steward at Old Trafford for the past 4 years, and a steward at Wigan for the past 3, i can't say i know of any choreographed movement during the game at any stadia. I can't even think of any reason why you would have noticed it. I suspect you aren't actually talking about the stewards, and perhaps you are talking about the outside security team 'CES' (Controlled event solutions).

At each stadium, you have safety stewards who operate inside the stadium, away from the pitch. Crowd / General stewards who are supposed to stand with their backs to the game, facing the crowd to spot any infringements, potential hazards or trouble makers (though the majority stand there watching the game). And you also have an outside security team, charged with searching fans entering the ground and throwing out any persistant trouble makers. These are usually ex-forces or part time doormen. Either way, stewards wear bright orange jackets and CES wear bright yellow.

I suspect its the security team that you have spotted moving up and down the stadium, this may be part of some tactic they employ when they are understaffed, to ensure all areas of the crowd are covered. Thats just a guess though, i could be wrong.

As a steward at Old Trafford.

The defense rests, no further questions your honour.

I've worked Goodison, Tranmere, Bolton and quite a few other places over the years too. Getting paid to watch Football, its not a bad gig.

Neville isn't so keen on CES, in fact all the ushoited match goers I know despise them. In fact when they were taking a stompin' in our end a couple of years ago, my phone was buzzin' with texts urging us to give them a good seeing to.

It explains a lot of his opinions if that's how he watches football, like.

It all really depends on where in the stadium you work, if your at the front, right near the pitch, you are supposed to stand facing to the side with one eye on the crowd, one eye on the game. If you work right at the top, at the back of the stand, or on a vomitory / stairwell then the only time you actually work more often than not is half time, and you can watch all the game. Unless you get my cushy job working on a disabled platform in which case you essentially open a door while fans wheel themselves on, watch the game, then open the door for them on the way out.

Simple as peas, and decent money for a day out and a laugh at the Football.
