We had a poor start to the game, looking edgy at the back and offering little threat going forwards.. Although we grew into the game as the first half went on creating some good chances and getting a goal, we continued to look vulnerable at the back with Crouch and the runners causing problems and creating numerous one on ones with Joel keeping us in the game and for me earning MOTM. Not a game for 3-5-2 which to Koeman's credit he recognised, changed it and we looked more solid second half.
I thought our midfield dominated from 20 minutes on, Schnieds was our best outfield player, oozing class, I seen he had 94% pass accuracy which is Xavi/Iniesta prime level and on a cold, windy night at Stoke as well. Very impressive full debut, be interesting to see what that
@davek has to say about it?
Tom Davies also had another good game with some class touches and he opened Stoke up a few times. Although, for me the most impressive aspect of his performance last night was after getting kicked time and time again. He just got up and carried on doing his stuff, showed tremendous character and determination in the words of Brendan Rodgers.
I didn't think Barkley, Mirallas and especially Rom we're at there best last night and if they had been we would have gone on to win the game comfortably. All have been fantastic in recent weeks however and can be excused. Lookman looked good on the ball when he came on and got into a few half chance positions. I think he'll prove really useful in the run in and is a very exciting prospect giving us a good option of the bench rather than Valencia. I'd also like to see him start one of the next 3. I think with the midfield dominance Schnied, Davies and Gueye will show, if the front 3 are on form we will begin to turn teams over. Hopefully Sunderland 7-0 (Not because I hate or don't respect Moyes, I just find it funny watching him suffer)
One negative point.. I think we need a new left back in the summer. I did think Baines would be our first choice until at least next summer, but with the way Koeman plays without wingers, it puts a lot more empathise on the full backs to drive forward and get crosses in regularly. I don't think Baines has that in his locker anymore and doesn't have the pace and legs to drive to the by line and get a cross in like Coleman does. There was a few times he received the ball with space ahead but chose to stop and play the ball inside last night.
Overall a point was fair, and I'm happy we showed signs of moving forward even though we didn't get the win.
