Street Spirit...

Radiohead are my favourite band of all time. Thom Yorke is a genius, love his lyrics and singing style!

I can't name a favourite song as there's just too many classics. Top 5 would be (in no particular order).

Street Spirit
Karma Police
How to disappear completely
Nude
Lucky

Anyone who hasn't got the 'best of' album that came out a few weeks ago go get it... its sooooo good!

Went to see them in Victoria Park a few weeks ago. They didn't play Street Spirit, or indeed any of the big anthemic numbers, but it was still a cool gig. Full set was:

1. 15 Step
2. Bodysnatchers
3. All I Need
4. National Anthem
5. Pyramid Song
6. Nude
7. Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
8. The Gloaming
9. Dollars & Cents
10. Faust Arp
11. There There
12. Just
13. Climbing Up The Walls
14. Reckoner
15. Everything In Its Right Place
16. How To Disappear Completely
17. Jigsaw Falling Into Place

18. Videotape
19. Airbag
20. Bangers and Mash
21. Planet Telex
22. The Tourist
23. Cymbal Rush
24. You And Whose Army?
25. Idioteque

Bloody long set and they played most of the songs I wanted so I was a happy camper :)

Well I saw them 6 times before they became all big and weird.

Remember bumping into them when they were driving their own van from a small gig in Liverpool.

Not really a fan of all the stuff they do now. Nothing really stands out for me as a classic.

Shame really.

Oh come on, Coldplay's latest song is just indulgence at its most. Remember people, don't believe your own hype!

Radiohead? They've got nothing on Coldplay...

*runs and hides*

Yes in the same way Maradonna had nothing on Ronny Rozenthal lol!

Seriously though Radiohead are the best band by a country mile... OK Computer has been voted the greatest album of all time on many polls & The Bends is a classic album. Ok it all went a bit weird from Kid A onwards, but their greatest hits litterally urinate all over Coldplays best songs.

I dont dislike Coldplay or anything, I just don't think you can compare Coldplay to Radiohead and leave with any music credability. Radiohead will stand the test of time and be rememebered in the same way that the like of Led Zeplin, Pink Floyd etc will be... as one of the greatest bands ever.

Jesus, check the Coldplay thread....I was joking

Having said that though Weller is a better song writer than Thom Yorke will ever be, and that isn't a joke. Although seeing as I now have no music credibility, what do I know?

Oh, and sorry, but OK Computer isn't better than Sgt Pepper's or Definitely Maybe. Not even in the same league. Greatest band ever?! Give me a break. The Beatles were far far better than anyone since. Radiohead aren't even the best band of their generation, let alone of all time.

Yes they're a good band, but I think the phrase "one of the greatest bands ever" is very overused. My favourite bands for example are The Jam, The Stone Roses and Oasis. But I'm not naive enough to claim that they're better than The Beatles, because they're just not. So please, don't accuse me of having no music credibilty after I make what is quite clearly a joke.

Its hard to compare Thom Yorke to Paul Weller as they both have a very different style, both excellent song writers though so i'll take back the 'no credability' jibe.

Sgt Pepper's is good but as I wasn't around then its hard for me to relate to it as much as OK Computer... I do like it though as it reminds me of being a kid as my dad used to listen to it. Definately Maybe was an excellent album at the time, but listening back to it now it lacks the same level of depth that OK Computer has. It really kicked off the whole Brit Pop scene though so it deserves credit for its influence.

I'm 18 pal, my Dad was only about 9 when Sgt Pepper's was released.

I've got a mate who's into Radiohead and he's always trying to ram their stuff down my throat, well, ears. I've personally never really 'got' them. Like I say, good band, but not for me :)

Well Weller like Oasis drew lyrics, licks, melodies straight from the Beatles well. So in my book that doesn't qualify as someone with great musical writing skills. It just means they realise that the Beatles sound is still worth a pilfer.

I remember years ago, when you were probably just starting high school Welts ;) - In an NME issue, or it may have Melody Maker (that's how long ago it was) they ran an article on Noel Gallacher's latest tune, and they basically mapped the whole song to Beatles back catalogue.

Yes Weller and Gallagher nick stuff from the Beatles, and neither of them pretend they don't. Funnily enough I read a really interesting piece along these lines. The author was arguing that it really doesn't matter, as it's what you do with it that matters. For example on Start! Weller just used the main riff from The Beatle's Taxman off the Revolver album. He uses that as his starting point, then writes a completely original song around it.

Similar with Town Called Malice. He used the bass line off some soul song which name escapes me, then develops it and adds stuff to create the song. Far from seeing this as negative I actually love all these influences in his music. He's not just influenced by The Beatles, Kinks, Small Faces etc like some people might expect. His latest album proves this, there's folk songs, instumentals, a piano ballad, jazz, funk, even a bloody spoken word piece (although the less said about that the better really!).

So to me it really doesn't matter when people nick bits of other songs. It might bother some people, but for me it's all about what they do with it and what the lyrics mean which is important :)

Well some might say that it's blatant ripping off. The fact that they have developed their own tune on the back of it is irrelevant. They are still taking another riff that someone developed and using that to make their own music. Lacks originality, and talent. I don't deny that Weller doesn't have catch tunes, he does. But I would never say he was a great, based on the fact he is far too transparent with his music.
