Burnley have discussed a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

The clubs are in contact over the prospective sale of Michael Keane to Everton and Burnley are keen to take McCarthy either as part of that deal or separately.

McCarthy is ready to leave Everton this summer and has interest from Newcastle United and Aston Villa among others but Everton have been looking for more than £20m for the Republic of Ireland international.

The 26-year-old, who joined from Wigan in 2013 for £13m, may not be so keen on a switch to Burnley even though Sean Dyche is looking to strengthen his squad with a number of new signings this summer. Steven Defour is also looking to leave.

Everton, who remain in talks with Chelsea over the sale of Romelu Lukaku, are bringing in Sandro Ramirez from Malaga but want to add another striker as well as Keane and Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea.

Holland U18 international Nathangelo Markelo is also poised to join Everton from FC Volendam. The 18-year-old can play at centre-back and right-back and is expected to link up with Everton's development squad.
