Summer Transfer Window 2017

I still think what this team misses is someone who can control the tempo of a game from deep midfield. Schneiderlin has shown signs of it but ideally you want a true class creative mid in there with him like a Modric/Xavi/Pirlo type. Obviously these are the hardest players in the world to find and aside from an ageing Carrick and a benched Fabregas none of the top 6 have one either with all preferring to shore up CM with sitting players and look to create further up the pitch with number 10s or play on the counter attack.

It's no coincidence to me though that Fergies United dominated the league playing Scholes and then Carrick. Real Madrid have started winning it all after pairing Modric with Kroos. Barca have dropped off as soon as Xavi left. Ancelotti has brought Alonso back in for Bayern. Juventus came back to prominence on the back of Pirlo the same way Milan have fallen since (he even made Pogba look like a 90 mill player).

If you can find one of these players they're worth putting everything on it. I'm hoping against hope Liam Walsh may turn out to be this player, a blue Scholes if you will. Someone like Verrati would be the dream but is out of our reach currently. There must be a young player out there though who hasn't been picked up by a CL team. Without one of these, unless you have some of the best forward players in the world, you won't win much unless you base your entire game on playing counter attack.

Leandro Paredes could be the type of player you're wanting whom we were linked with in January.

it's definitely what we need. When discussing captains after jags, it's glaringly obvious our candidates are short. Williams is the only one imo and he;ll be replaced in 2 or 3 years time as well anyway. I know coleman is a national skipper, but i'm just not masively convinced that he's captain material. But it's just those two and barry who is now not really playing.

We definitely need more leadership and characters in the side, players who will drive their team mates on and be demanding. Williams is of that mould, Schneiderlin seems to have that in him, Were linked to Rooney and he's the same, van Dijk another, captained Groningen, Celtic and now Southampton and now were linked to Klaasen the Ajax captain and he's another winner that's lead Ajax to league titles etc.

Those players at times are invaluable, especially when the going gets tough. You look at Arsenal and their a team full of talent, but lack those leaders, those characters with that mentality to drag their side through rough patches and that's why they bottle it in the end every season and end up in a fight to stay in the top four instead of the title race etc.

@Barnfred 55 @Eggs

Agree across the board that he's likely in the £20-25m bracket so the question is: just how much money do we have.
Who knows?. I'm hoping it could be as much as £150m when you factor in what we can bring in from player sales. We haven't had a great deal net outlay since the summer, so I reckon we could have as much as £50m available from this year and next years TV revenues. Also depends what players he sells but I think we can get the following

McCarthy £20m
Funes Mori £15/20m
Deulefeu £12/15m
Cleverley £8m
Niasse £10m
Lennon £5m

I also think we could bring in at least another £10m or so from other sales of our younger players (we won't keep all of Galloway, Pennington and Browning plus there's the likes of Garbutt, McAleney, Grant, Henning, Jones, Tarahsaj and Rodriguez who could all attract fees), which means we may bring in around £80m from sales. Mosh would only have to put in around £20m of his own funds to give us a £150m kitty. Who knows. He may be prepared to put in more.

Out of that we'll need to buy at least

2 Defenders
1 Left sided player who could also play wing back
1 Attacking midfielder/playmaker who is also dead ball specialist
1 Support striker

To get the calibre of player we need would probably take up a huge chunk of that budget. So how much would we have available to buy younger players that still need a bit of development, like Tielemans and Pickford (both of whom would likely cost around £25m)?.

You never know. Walsh may find us another Gana out there;).

Plus little things like the new shirt sleeve sponsorship. Gana by position or Gana by cheap but good? haha.

I can't see Funes Mori going tbh, with us switching between 2-3 central defenders per game we need more than most and he's improving. Selling him means we only need to go out and spend more on another.

why do people want to sell mori? i know he has his liabilities, but he's definitely a good backup option. Look at all the sellable assets we have, we don't need to sell him as well. McCarthy i don't know, but given his injuries and how many centre midfielders we have, he could be the big sale, as well as those out on loan. But jags is finished, and the rest apart from williams are youngsters. We need a squad, and selling mori requires us to buy at least 2 centre backs, if not 3.

Yeah Mori is a very decent CB, keep him and bring in one first team CB in the summer and you have Williams, new CB, Mori, Holgate as first team players (presuming Jags is off).

Gana as in cheap but very good. Any more gems like that releases more of our transfer budget for other players. One can but hope.

Take what you say about Funes Mori. That's just my personal choice because I think he's an accident waiting to happen. Unlike Jag's he's tended to get away with his mistakes but he makes 3/4 a game on average. No always obvious but things like getting caught wrong side. Whilst he's first choice for one of the top International sides, we could probably attract top price from Italy or Spain, where his game is probably better suited tbf. Then replace him by a more secure English model like Keane, at a similar cost. Just makes sense to me. But we also need to bring in a top defender that would likely cost anything between £40/50m.

Same thing with McCarthy. I know a lot of fans would keep him, but we already have 2 very similar players in Gana and Schneids. He would fetch a good price and we could use the money to bring n somebody like Tielemans who would offer us something different.

if we're starting to really compete for CL places, i still think he's a good enough squad option. I agree we need a new starting CB alongside williams or possibly mori himself depending on form, but he's had big game exposure at international and domestic level. We'd do very well to sell the idea of being a backup for everton to a player who's doing better than argentina's starting CB, if we sold him. We're building something, we're not going for a massive overhaul.

If Koeman means what he says about one more window will put us in a position to challenge the "big boys" then I think we need to be spending well over £100m in the summer! We need another 4-5 class players to improve the team/squad as an whole and it's going to cost big bucks.

Look at Utd, their 6th currently and not gaurenteed to make the CL this season and seem miles away from challenging for the title anytime soon yet come the summer they want Griezmann at over £80m, Lindelof at over £40m and are looking at the likes of Kroos & Dier for CM to take over from Carrick and neither of those will come cheap so they could be looking at a near on £200m spend in the summer and their currently a position ahead of us!

So we're going to have to sell and buy well this summer to be able to bridge the gap and compete like Koeman wants.

Perhaps, but I'm always of the opinion that one world class player if it's the right one brings everyone up a notch or two like Suarez did at Liverpool or Kante did at Leicester. I'd argue we have one title class player in Rom already, one top 4 player in Schneiderlin, potentially Gueye also. Then there's a host of potential in Barkley Davies Lookman etc. Just getting in that one magical player in midfield or out wide could easily spark this side into getting top 4.

We need to replace Mori, Williams and Robles looking at spurs today the gulf in class at the back compared to ours is evident I'd rather get this sorted first instead of wasting big money on overpriced attacking players

Agree 100%

Pickford, Keane and Van Dijk would be massive upgrades but can't see us signing more than 1 of those tbh.
