Cant see us making a second bid so quickly after the first was rejected.

They should be left to stew.

Surely by saying it's end of the matter in an official statement, then we can't really continue to pursue?

I dunno how these things work, but if we are so public then it seems difficult to then make further bids?

Dunno, Liverpool managed it with VVD (albeit the signing ended up going through a few months later).

But yeh, weird.

And like I said, if we have indeed given up after one bid, then frankly it's completely rubbish from Brands and co this late in the window if he's our main target – which, given we were willing to spend £10m over our record to do so, you'd imagine he is.

"Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs.

"We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.

"We respect Southampton's position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player."
