Sunderland are a real club.

I have my own purely subjective list of "real clubs" based on I suppose tradition and class.

Sunderland, Aston Villa, Arsenal, man U are real clubs.

Man C, Chelsea,are minnows.
Wouldn't exactly call city minnows. Even in league 1 they still averaged over 30k a week, that shows how passionate their support was. However what can't be denied is since the shieks money has arrived, they seem to have 'forgotten their roots' and now feel they have a Devine right to win things ala the RS, utd, Chelsea.

Maybe not minnows but never a big club. Back in the Lee/Bell/Summerbee era when they were winning leagues and cups they never came close to Everton, Liverpool, United in terms of attendance.

I would never bracket Chelsea with the RS or United. Say what we like about the RS neighbours they won their titles the honest way. Took a biggish big city club and made it a franchise by regularly winning and competing. United got the big "granny vote" boost of Munich but built a great team in the 1960s tha really put them on the international map. They are both loathsome international brands now but to be fair they did it the honest way.......unlike little city.

City are prob above us now, attendance wise, and they always had very similar crowds to us.

Infact, the only difference between us, was that we had won more Titles, everything else, we are very very very similar.

*remembers a time in the early-1990's when Newcastle were in the First Division and they couldn't get 10,000 to turn up at home games, so much so they kept sending free tickets to the Newcastle University in a bid to fill some seats*

Bugs me to say this but our attendances in 92-3 93-4 were appalling! It took the Wimbledon game to get our attendances back to 35,000 plus in 94-95
Kendall's last game at home to Southampton 93-94 was 13,667 - embarrassing but true. Beat Liverpool 2-0 that year then 20,000 turned up for the next home game to see us lose to Norwich 5-1. So we certainly had our part timers in those days
