I think you are putting too much stock into the Manager's influence. I do NOT believe Roberto is a good manager and I do believe he should be fired, but the players can put in a day's work no matter who the manager is. Tactics come from Roberto. Effort and desire is mostly on the players on the pitch.
They should all be ashamed of themselves from Roberto down

That may be true but the manager has put this squad together, has failed to develop any sense of pride, team spirit or togetherness. No character when the going gets tough. Add to that the continual playing of badly out of form players and the failure to address key issues, such as set pieces. It has been far too easy to score against us for TWO YEARS - regardless of which combination of players are put out. All of these things lie at the managers door.
