Super League - Pat Nevin's opinion

The critical issue is separation of super league from domestic league or the qualification and elimination process to the entire thing being on merit rather than reputation.

There is a palpable sense in Italy and Spain that they can't compete with premier league finances. Late stage capitalism demands that domestic competition be sacrificed even if the replacement competition will be an unwatchable procession of Spurs getting humped in Riyadh on consecutive Tuesdays to an ever diminishing audience.

The genie is out of the bottle, and frankly the sooner perspective and competition are re-introduced to whatever the remaining teams are left contesting the better.
It's been a process in motion since the formation of the Champions League. Look at the teams that won the European Cup in the decade or so before the CL was formed and you've got a cross section from across Europe. Now it's the same handful of "super clubs" competing, pretty much all of whom have got their domestic leagues sewn up before a ball is kicked. When you pretty much know that City, Bayern, PSG, Barca/Real, and Juve will win their respective league then it's already farcical and it won't change now because the financial gap has been entrenched by the CL. Even clubs like Inter, Napoli, or Milan who have decent seasons end up losing their best players. The sport has become a bit crap tbh.

It’s a sad state of affairs. A lot of people have got very rich at the expense of the soul of the sport.
