Tennis 2024

ladies final today. The diminutive Italian lady (Paolini) is quite the story and everyone seems to love the bones of her. Krejcikova possibly slight favourite?

Expecting a really good match. I know it's pimms, I know it's champagne, I know it's strawberries and cream, I know they all own stables and wouldn't spit on me if I was on fire, but I don't enjoy it for the crowd, the skill and athleticism and creativity of the game is the spectacle. And damn it if I won't find something to justify watchin.

Tennis used to have some great characters over the years in both the men’s and woman’s game, Martina, Sabatini, Graf, Seles, Capriatti…. Then McEnroe, Jimmy Connor’s, pat cash, steffan edberg, Becker, Lendl, Agassi , Sampras ….. whilst the players now are probably fitter and stronger they don’t seem to hold the interest as
much as they used to

It's a character-driven game, much like auto racing, and this younger generation doesn't have nearly as much personality as ones past. They can play, but with the possible exception of Alvarez, I agree they don't seem to be the characters the greats of old were.

They'll come to the fore. I think it's a bit naughty that the bbc has kyrgios on comms, specific to his behaviour* with a former personal life partner.

It's a new media age though, look at the cost wrought on Osaka for instance. Bad boy behaviour the likes of McEnroe and Nastasi is done with as so many talents are battling for the real richest of the corporate sponsorship circuit. Becker was pretty bland, his character only really turned up after he'd retired. And what an explosion of decisions those were!
I found Djokovic outburst about the booing rather amusing.
