It's a bit different as Froome had already won that a couple of years before Hart and to be truthful in the imagination of the public the other grand tours are never going to be the same as 'The Tour'.

Had Virginia Wade won her last slam in 2019 then it would be a case of Radacanwho? too. It's the number of years in between, 2 whole generations without seeing a British Woman win a slam, just like it was for Murray, just as it was for Wiggins and Thomas - as you know first Welsh winner - had Froome been Welsh then Thomas wouldn't have got a look in the year he won SPOTY.
Froome and Wiggins are probably a good example tbh, as Froome has achieved much more in the sport than Wiggins, yet Wiggins is a knight and Froome just a CBE or something.

Like Geoghan Hart winning the Giro last year, you mean? You doubtless won't have heard of him both because he's not in a Tory-friendly sport and, like Radacanu, has not been able to replicate what was largely a fluke victory.

It's not so much her that I don't like as the people who have bigged her up to be something incredible. My first foray into this thread was to suggest that Peaty was more deserving as he has not only dominated his sport for years but set the 20 odd quickest times ever seen, which is a level of dominance no other British athlete has ever achieved in their sport. By contrast, Radacanu still has some way to go to prove that her US Open win wasn't just extremely lucky. Hopefully she'll do that and will win many majors, but she's had the kind of plaudits heaped on her that would have been warranted at the end of her career after a fortnight. It's absurd.

Peaty won 4 European Championship and 2 Olympic gold medals this year, in the process became the first British swimmer to ever defend an Olympic title.

It's great that Radacanu won the US Open, but we have to remember that the highest ranked player she beat en route was 12th in the world, and she only defeated two seeded players in her 10 matches. She's never beaten any player ranked in the top 10 in the world. It's a bit like lauding England's progress in the Euros and World Cup, when they didn't beat a single team ranked higher than them in the world.

Maybe Radacanu will kick on next year, but she's got a way to go before she can show that her run wasn't just extremely lucky.
She's 19 years of age Bruce and that us open win was incredible. Her tennis quality thru qualifying and the tournament itself was on a level of the female greats.Despite recent results she will repeat this success at another grand slam of that I've no doubt. You don't win massive tournaments like that through luck. The girl she beat in the final destroyed some big names but Emma hammered her in the final.Won it without losing a set.Your swimmers achievements are obviously superb.Your tennis comments are ludicrous.

Behave. To win the title, she beat the 128th, 49th, 41st, 43rd, 12th, 18th, and 73rd best players in the world. That's not on the level of the female greats in any shape or form.

Without studying statistics to my knowledge not many, if any women players have ever won a grand slam without dropping a set. Certainly not at 19 years of age.But all luck don't be daft.

Her record was that no one has come through qualifiers to then go on and win without losing a set. I imagine someone has come through a tournament proper without losing one.

Her achievement I guess is closest to Becker when he won as a 17 year old wild card in the modern era. Let’s see what she achieves going forward. I hope she carries on and goes on to smash it. Getting this level of success at a young age in sport is very tough, especially in individual sports. In tennis alone look at Capriati, Hingis, Sharapova etc.

If Everton won the FA Cup beating Crystal Palace, Burnley, and a bunch of Championship and League 1 fodder we'd be happy but we wouldn't be proclaiming Benitez as the second coming, would we?

Indeed. If she has the career Becker had then I'll be the first to say she's done extremely well. All I'm saying is that the hoopla chucked at the girl is akin to her already having had the career Becker had rather than winning one tournament. Hopefully her desire is such that she really just wants to win trophies, as if it's to secure all of the other stuff associated with tennis then she can pretty much phone it in for the rest of her career already.

I am not sure you are familiar with the British media.... :)

The media will be straight down her neck in the most vile way as soon as they want to be. I suggest not letting the media get into your head, not letting other peoples opinions get into your head, not letting a general public vote get into your head.

If you enjoy a sport that is not in the public eye as much as another sport then do that but it is not worth getting all antsy about a sports person because she happens to be talked about by other people more than another sports person.

I hope Peaty is sat there enjoying all the medals he achieved by being the best he can be rather than sulking because the public didn't vote for him in a personality contest.

What a mess they’ve made here the Australians.

Personally, the right decision. He’s lied through his teeth and is looking to use his status to gain exemption.

If I went to Australia, and was unvaccinated, I’d be turned down, why should Djokovic?
My opinion is neutral, if you don’t want the vaccine, that’s absolutely fine, I won’t judge you, but if restrictions are in place because of your decisions, then you have to adhere to them.

Djokovic has had a nightmare, and I’m quite glad he’s been brought into the limelight for being self centred.
