As a sporting contest it was wonderful to see her come back to win. The nerves in the opening set was there for all to see. It's been the only game I'd watched this tournament and I was wondering how she got to the final tbh.
Sport being what it is, I was mighty impressed watching her dig deep to banish her fears , play her shots and watch her confidence restored. By the third set she was in full swing. the way she won her serve from 0 - 40 , so brave and impressive, reminded me of our game against Palace.
I suspect when she won , she possibly went into a little bit of shock as to what she'd done.
I'm not into the debate on her being allowed to play, the powers to be decided she was, and that was good enough for me.
She's represented Kazakhstan since 2019. There is no debate. She changed way before this war in Ukraine started and she did it because they backed her with more money than the Russian federation offered her. She also turned down scholarships from US Universities to represent Kazakhstan.

The British media mocking the Russians for claiming victory in the Women's final when one of there born and bred citizens wins the trophy.
These are the same people cheering on a fella born in South Africa and only lived here a hand full of years as the new great British hope.
It's a funny old game
Exactly right.

How can anyone mock the Russians claiming that an ethnic Russian, born in Russia, brought up in Russia, still living in Moscow with her Russian parents and who played for Russia before switching for funding purposes to a neighbouring federation isn't their Wimbledon winner?

It's daft beyond belief.

The girl played fantastically well, blew everyone away and breezed out SW 19 as a Russian who didn't once fall for the trap of condemning her country of birth and residence.

Yep,as I wrote I'm not interested in the conflict of if she should or should not have been there.
A super sporting contest was what impressed me.

The humiliation of Kate Middleton having to hand over the trophy to the likes of Daniil Medvedev or Sabalenka was one the primary reasons the All England Club allowed this years Wimbledon to be reduced to an exhibition tournament.

They took a huge fine to try and prevent it

Backfired massively - you could see Kate just wanted out of there as soon as she handed the trophy over.

The incessant attempts of the media over the two weeks to provoke negative comments about Russia from the girl were pointless as well. She lives and trains in Moscow, the likelihood of her denouncing her own country were slim to none.

I didn't used to like Kyrgios but he has changed my mind recently. Great talent. I hope he beats Djokovic who to me is thoroughly unlikeable.

Djokovic has looked flaky even against low level opponents such as the South African in the last round.

Looks like Kyrgios could win this if he keeps calm.

Michael Schumacher was ten tons of twazz, the thing is, he was immensely talented and the best driver in his day.
It's not about which personality you like, it's who is best for the job.

A lot is made about the British sentiment of rooting for the underdog, I wonder how this stacks up re attitudes to those from elsewhere...

That was a disgrace pressuring a tennis player into making statements that could have ended with her and her Muscovite family being targetted for attack, offical or otherwise.

Underlines the cut of that All England Club: dominated by ex-military officers, the aristocracy and big business.

They operated a racist bar in the past and wouldn't let blacks join as members until the 1950s and they are anti-semitic.

It would have been an easy decision by that lot to fall in behind any government request to bar Russians and Belorussians.

IMO Wimbledon should have been boycotted by all the players this year, and they should still be denied ranking status by the two players' unions until they lift their bans, apologise and make a massive donation to the WTA and ATP.

Kev we all know you have a massive boner for Russia. Weird that you support someone so vehemently that chose to represent someone else because she wasn’t backed by the Russians. I don’t agree with the ban on the Russian and Belarusian players by the way. But she hasn’t represented Russia for 4 years.

She is Russian mate, your desperate attempts to suggest otherwise are just part of the standard British pining for an empire over which the sun has long since set.
