Just joined recently but really enjoying speaking to you lot and it's a very well ran forum. Haven't been told to bugger off yet - Result!

700 quid a month to maintain? Bloody hell. I had no idea it was that much.

This is the only site I disable adblock for. I made a vexed threat, in a fit of pique, to enable it a year or so ago, when I felt a political debate was being repressesed that I was following it. But since then, there's been a separate part of the forum, which is a clever and typically sensible compromise - even though I don't look in it anymore, in deference to my blood pressure.

Anyhows. This is a brilliant site, which I look to daily for insight, humour, humanity, inhumanity and general babble to enrich my day. I'd like to be a forum supporter, but have no income, living off my dwindling savings, so I am happy to put up with what are very, very unobtrusive ads to help the cause.

Incidentally, I'd love to know what algorithm is used to select the ads though, and what input it had found on my system to give me 4 months of ads for industrial gas detecting equipment!

We've noticed a small drop in visitors with adblock enabled on GrandOldTeam.

Thanks, we don't half appreciate it. We work hard to ensure advertisers don't take the piss (no rollovers, popups, audio sound etc), we place them well and we hope in return, visitors will reward us by disabling adblock to help us out.

GOT costs over £700 a month, so we need ad revenue to keep the platform online, I couldn't afford it otherwise.

As well as disabling adblock, please help us stay compliant with Google - our advertising partner. If they suspend our account, we'd really struggle to keep the site online.

They insist on a variety of terms, "Why can't we say this word?" - well, because Google dictates it.

Another is images. I've recently received the below;

I don't lads, perhaps didn't phrase that well.

It would cost that much, if we didn't have any rev from ads/subs to mitigate the cost. We've even had a couple of months this year we made a profit, albeit often swallowed up the next month.

We have Server, Server Backup, Amazon Ses/Emails, App Developer Updates, Store Listing sub fees, security certificate, forum license renewals, front page software plugin renewals, cloudflare subs, statsfc subs etc - doesn't half add up.

Just to expand slightly on what @chrismpw and The Boss Man have said: The ads are totally unobtrusive and there are no such things as pop-ups etc. They blend in seamlessly and you'll hardly notice them. In fact the big RED bar saying you've got adblock on is more intrusive than the ads. If you don't know how to turn of your adblock/Ublock or whatever then send me a pm and I'll see if I can help ya.
