The biggest problem remains the exclusivity provisions, so you could effectively offer someone no work but stop them from working for someone else by virtue of the exclusivity. This has been outlawed, but the legislation around it was very weak and could easily be got around by making "zero hour" contracts "1 hour" contracts, ie an employer guarantees an hour a week but no more, and retains the exclusivity agreement with the "employee".

Pretty poor way of going on if that's the case. Hopefully such organisations won't remain in business for very long.

Re the whole zero hour concept though, isn't it following Coarsian thinking to it's natural conclusion? After all, he said that it's only logical to create a firm if the 'transaction costs' of hiring a freelancer (including searching for them, hiring them and so on) is more than it would be to have them on a retained arrangement (and potentially have them under-utilized for parts of their contract).

Nowadays, many of the transaction costs Coarse spoke about have been reduced significantly, so it's much easier to bring in talent as and when you need it rather than have them on salary just in case.

what stops them obtaining more marketable skills?
If you read the posts above you'll see that many people doing just that are in zero hours contracts trying to pay their way through university. But other people are living a hand to mouth existence and training up means deferred gratification - punting a decent living (or the prospects of it) years down the road: a luxury option they cant afford to make.

Freelancers by definition are not restricted to work with one organisation. Zero hour contracts with exclusivity restrict employment elsewhere but do not guarantee employment with the "employer". Do you not see the difference?

Yes, as I said above :)

Love these CameronMustGo things. They're hilarious. I'm sure he's got a twitter alert set up, and each new one, he calls a meeting to decide if enough is enough, and whether he must now go.

Saw one this morning 'CameronMustGo cos people are deliberately getting themselves put in jail to get fed and roof over their heads'. Yeah, sure.

You may laugh - as I do - but it does happen!

Not sure why that's all down to DC though!

In other news, PMQ's is a joke.

My mum did that when she was young and broke. It's more common than you'd think, and not really a new thing.

Saw someone suggesting the pressure was building on Cameron because it had trended for two days... yeah, I bet he's shitting himself.

so even if the employee, who the union have taken it upon themselves to negotiate on behalf off, doesn't agree the changes to terms and conditions then they are forced to accept them ? is this right?
recognised by who? the employer? The non member employee is therefore forced to have them negotiate on their behalf eventhough they do not want to be represented by them? Democracy?
yes mate ,even if you all joined a diffrent union or made a workers commmity, and there was more of you than them , as the have they have collective bargaining rights within your place of work, as such your company dosnt have to deal with anybody else, it would take forever to get anything done otherwise.
In the case of forming or joining another union the Bridlington agreement would kick in and the first union although smaller would still keep there position.
I have been through it mate last place of work , the union gave all are condisions away, worse shifts , 44 days extra days in work, less earnings for overtime, allsorts of stuff in return for 60 odd extra members, lots jumped ship to a diffrent union but it was a waste of time .
i went to a diffrent company doing the same job, infact less and get far more money and days off.
