Not one person has come out with a good reason why the NMW can't be £18 an hour

Affordability
Competitiveness
Market forces
Acceptable Product Prices

Unless you have a captive market with no competitors it can't be done, but let us know how it works out...........

Should clarify my WUMing here.

All the above is true about me, but I have had a bit of luck on the way, through either good management or hard work contributing to that. But I sympathise with some of those who just don't get things to go their way, and they're misrepresented by the bludgers in my opinion. Being without a job would be horrible.

Raising the min wage isn't the answer in my opinion, but more should be done to ensure people get into work easier, are better looked after, and massive corporations aren't taking their staff for a ride.

There is a big issue in having 'a bit of luck'. I've always helped people to get on and given them opportunities to succeed, a great many people have done very well through my support. This is not a 'look how good I am at helping people' post, but it is a truth that people need help, especially in the early stages of their careers. Anyone who had a great career had assistance, and it needs to be acknowledged that everyone needs a helping hand at some stage, and that people who can help, should..............

Everyone pays VAT, your remark in nonsensible, how could you have a zero rate VAT on certain items? and which ones. Which outgoings in your mind attract VAT that the poorest buy? Are the people you are thinking of working full time. Personally I would like to see a 25% vat rate on luxury items, e,.g TVs over £1000, Cars over £45000, Holidays over £10000, Business rate flights. etc now that could be done. It is done in Australia. Now notice not one political party has mentioned this, not even Labour who go on about cost of living. Such a VAT figure could bring quite a bit and would cost nothing to collect.

Misunderstanding. You talk about raising of the income tax threshold being a good thing. I'd simply argue that it actually it doesn't help those with the lowest incomes. Acknowledging that everyone pays VAT, when you have so little income that you have no choice but to spend it all just to get by, by paying 20% tax as opposed to 17.5% there is a section of society, the poorest, who are worse off.

If you think about it any rise for a standard living wage would reduce the governments outlay on handing out tax credits to top up low wages for most employees - That is the employer would lose this subsidy from the tax payer!

Definitely, and in my job if I see young people up and coming who deserve help I will support them 100%. I guess I look for initiatve in that person too, it's not a one way street.
