You're correct about the politics in Bavaria - although Munich is pretty much a left-of-centre stronghold. I would equate the CDU (German conservatives) and ÖVP (Austrian conservatives) more with Heath-style conservatism (both have frequently been in coalitions with their left-of-centre equivalents).

Bavarian conservatives (CSU) are more right-wing but not like the nasty wing of English conservatism.
