The AJ/Cahill conundrum

Bruce Wayne

Player Valuation: £100m
Yesterdays game underlined the conundrum facing Moyes at the moment. Yakubu is obviously untouchable in this form. Cahill had a welcome return to form yesterday, whilst AJ was outstanding again from the bench and arguably turned the game in our favour. AJ/Cahill/Yakubu have played together just twice this season (including yesterday).

Can they play together in a 442?

Hard to say although I fancy seeing us play 4-4-2 more often, but for sure it is safer to start with 4-4-1-1 against a strong side such as Portsmouth.

Some people might think the reason for 4-4-2 in the 2nf half work so well is due to player getting tired so fresh lega nd fast player like AJ become more effective while it might not work the same if we have started 4-4-2 from the beginning.

But I certainly fancy us starting with 4-4-2 against team such as Sunderland.

Na same again vs Sunderland i say, but maybe bring AJ on earlier, maybe half time. Coz they have to get a result in every game now so we will have to ride any pitiful attempt of a storm they offer.

i dont know if anyone else has been feeling the same as me, i seem to be on my own on this one however....Cahill has been [Poor language removed] me off for 12 months plus now, even before his injury he went missing all the time except for set pieces, recently i think people have begun to notice it and he has bucked his ideas up of late, especially in the last two games he has put in two brilliant performances, i hope it isnt to shut ppl up in the short term and he puts a shift in in every one of the last 10 games. he will be key.

No arguably about it- AJ turned the game. I think we looked solid in a 4-4-2 against a very strong midfield. I think Cahill is developing all the time as a midfielder ala Scholes.

They can play with 2 up front but we play better (normally) with 1 upfront and Cahill behind so for now thats the formation we should stick with. Just tough luck on Aj

I'll have to eat my words...... thought cahill was outstanding even in the 4-4-2 system

Would happily see us play 4-4-2 against the mackems and tear them a new one again !!!

Was Cahill crying when he scored ???

Think we can accommodate all three but cant see it happening in big games. I think Moyes is happy with what he's going out with now and use someone like Johnson in the last quarter of the game, where he can come on and make a real difference.

its about options, having top quality on the bench to come on and alter the dynamic of the game is priceless.

The one thing that worries me is keeping those 'options' happy- AJ, Baines and Fernandes are not going to be happy sitting on the bench and Vaughan and Vic are getting to that age where they just want to play 1st team football. just hope the guts of our squad arent ripped out during the summer because half of them sign for Newcastle in the search for 1st team football.

if we get champions league football next year, the squad will get a thorough run out, depending on how far we get we might end up in the uefa again, so along with the carling piss pot and the fa cup we will have more games than we will know how to cope with.

doesnt look like gravesen is staying
doesnt look like munny is staying
cant see gardner staying

stubbs has gone
silva has gone
vdm is a certain departure

not sure on valente, think he might be portugal bound - the nicer weather will be kinder to his aching legs.

cars and nevs the two old players in the side, are both a year older.

we still have one of the smallest squads in the league.

whether this is really the case or not, i'm not too sure, but my perception is that we seem to operate 442 better when we switch to it during a match rather than kicking off the game with that formation.

I'm not sure how long AJ will take on the bench, he said he doesnt mind but someone with his ability should be playing week in, week out.
