The BeNeLiga - a Merged Dutch and Belgian League

Player Valuation: £35m
Discussions have been underway for sometime between Belgian teams and Dutch teams to create a combined 18 team league called "The BeNeLiga" (taking the first two letters of Belgium and Netherlands and combining them with "Liga")
It is thought that the Dutch 'big six', namely Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord, AZ Alkmaar, Utrecht and Vitesse Arnhem, would be afforded a place in the league.

Belgium's biggest five clubs: Anderlecht, Club Bruges, Standard de Liege, Ghent and Genk, would also be placed into the proposed BeNeliga. The remaining seven places in the division would then be determined by results over the previous five seasons, with a split of 10 Dutch and eight Belgian sides. We are sure that is going to cause absolutely zero controversy.

It is not yet clear how relegation would work. The second tiers could potentially remain regionalised either by country or even across borders to minimise travel costs for less wealthy clubs.

The number of European places afforded to teams in the Netherlands and Belgium are also likely to be affected. Each nation currently has five spots each, but those are likely to reduce to at most seven, depending on how the BeNeliga is ranked by UEFA's coefficients.

The 25 professional clubs in Belgium have voted in favour of the new league. Below is a link to an article with more information about it and a youtube video

I think it could be good for some of these teams, there is an estimation that TV revenue would more than double from what it is now allowing for these teams to compete more readily with the big teams from the top 5 leagues. I think the biggest drawbacks would be for the fans, they would have no natural rivalry with the teams from the other country, aside from national pride and although the travel distances are not that far, compared to other european countries (4.5 hours would be the biggest journey), the fans in these 2 countries are not used to doing it.

Thin edge of the wedge / can't stop progress...

It's all of the above, and on the day that I see the nfl has signed a 100 billion dollar media deal, it's not really surprising

Would be a very appealing league to watch and follow I think.

The distribution of teams between the nations seems fair.

In all situations like this then as long as promotion and regulation to and from the top league is open to all clubs, and not a closed shop, then it seems like a win for all.

Brands will love this, he can start scouting their young up and coming players to stop us paying over the odds for players like Iwobi...lol

The promotion and relegation is still TBD, I think they could have a combined 2nd division and the highest placed Dutch team and highest placed Belgian team come up from 2nd division and the lowest ranked Belgian Team and Dutch team go down from top league to the bottom. To keep the ratio the same.

The alternative is still have the lowest ranked team from each nation relegated, from the Beneliga but to have the individual national leagues with their own 2nd division, so then the champions from the Belgian League and Dutch league replace them.

The only thing that has been agreed is there would be some promotion and relegation.

Nice idea really, isn't it?

With all due to respect to both the Belgian Pro and the Eredivisie, they're leagues which are in decline, whilst still producing excellent players. Even as recent as the mid-late 90's there were excellent Ajax sides, and in 2005, PSV came close to making the CL final, so there is still talent, but outside of your so called big sides....

Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, Anderlecht, Gent, Genk who are historically the big clubs and the established sides like AZ, who are a match for anyone on their day, there isn't really much competition is there?

Heracles? Eupen? VVV Venlo lost 13-0, it's not that competitive, I think on paper it's great for a neutral, i'm sure if you support one of the bigger teams, you'd be excited by it, but teams like Den Haag, Sparta Rotterdam losing their derbies and the big games could be financially disastrous for them.

Certainly is a grab to try and compete with the big 5 leagues, and I hope they can do it.

The countries don't have enough talent to keep a league up on their own. Putting them together is good for all parties I think.

I think it depends how they structure the money. Forbes and Skysports said that a TV deal for this new league could be over $470m per season, currently the Belgian league get $122m and dutch league gets $95m, so each team will get an increase, under the new deal and if they create a league below the Beneliga for the other teams from Belgium and Netherlands top leagues, that could generate its own money and get payments from the big league.
