I put down the creativity and civilisation to the celts. The organisation, industry and bloody mindedness to the angles and saxons, and the greed, repression, brutality, feudalism, nobility, empire grabbing etc. down to the normans.

I'm not a fan of the normans and will happily sneer at the aristocracy and anybody with a "de" in their name.

Chris. I can see what you mean but all of those things are in people, not races or governments. Matter of timing and power. How about Basil de Farmer, the knight in shining armour? A true hero.

The type of upwardly mobile second band pupil who played golf, was a 'hope to be a prefect' creep but sadly had neither the personality nor brains. This one had a wealthy family who found him an even wealthier wife though. Never found him decent morals or a personality. At least I can be certain he will die one day.
