The Champions League

Don't know where this Bs about the champions League not being good comes from we have just seen Chelsea and Madrid play one of the games of the season atletico and city go toe to toe as well. In recent years seen spurs beat Ajax and reach the final with the last kick of the game, as well as other great games.

I think the people who say it has gone downhill don't have bt sport's
Sounds to me like you're agreeing with many on this thread. Games for the sake of it then it might get interesting towards the end.

It's rubbish really isn't it?

I mean, yes, you'd want to win it, but FFS it's a pony old tournament compared to the old European Cup and the revamped early Champions League tournaments.

The group stages are barely worth watching; the KO stages have become predictable - full of financially doped English teams making their way to the SFs (and even the Spanish have fallen off the pace apart from a half decent Madrid).

It's just not a spectacle.

Of course, I'll PMSL if / when Liverpool get seen off this season, but this tournament is dead. The speed with which the scab Euro clubs wanted to ditch it for the Euro Scab League tells the story. The CL has to go or be revamped massively.

The Euro Conference League

I've said this for a while mate, when it was the European cup you had to have won the league title in whatever league it was you played in to qualify, there was no keeping teams apart because of who they were, now you can finish 4th in your league and be in the 'Champions league' absolute farce mate.

What's really hammering that home now is the fall off in the threat from the Italians, Germans and Barcelona.

I think it's done for personally.

The final will be spectacular as it usually is a good spectacle, but I cant believe sponsors want this format anymore. Outside of fans who follow the 3/4 elite teams, who would be arsed watching stages + all KO stages?

The other farce about it all mate is that you can get knocked out in the Champions league group stage then get a second chance by being put into the Europa league.

i enjoy the europa more

Yeah but even then you have a handful of CL group stage failures who were knocked out getting another chance to win a european pot.

All of it needs a complete overhaul by UEFA and it can only be a slight change to the format we see currently or revert back to drawing names out of a bowl and straight knock out. Either way i can still see the same teams rolling into the last 8 each year.

…..as we saw with Chelsea beating City, I have a theory that teams winning their domestic title rarely win the CL in the same season. Indeed, the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool won it in seasons when not even challenging for their domestic title.

i should go back and check but that’s my theory.

Used to love the champions league when it was on ITV. Real Madrid in the old days in that black Tekka away kit. That game vs United at old Trafford when Ronaldo (Brazilian) destroyed them and got a standing ovation.

I think the sport being on free to air TV, probably had a lot to do with its popularity in the UK. Watching it as a kid it was probably only this and the FA cup that I watched on TV. It’s been on BT since the 15/16 season which I think is damaging long term as it’s taken away from the casual fan, similar to what happened to boxing. I think uefa should do a deal where 1 game from each Round of the competitions are on free to air TV

@Saint Domingo I wonder if Parish can kick-start a movement against UEFA or do you believe he's wizzing in the wind?

I'm losing less and less interest in the sport and I'll be shocked if im the only one.

The 14 other PL sides and clubs from around Europe need to rally together on this issue.
