The Club World Club

Exclusively on DAZN I think

Can’t see many signing up just for this

Might have made more sense for them to go with a terrestrial broadcaster if they wanted to get as many eyeballs on the new format as possible

looks very dodgy in terms of DAZN, Saudi Arabi and FIFA.

DAZN are showing the world club cup games for free to the public. Earlier this year the Saudi Investment fund bought 10% of DAZN for $1bn, DAZN then signed a deal with FIFA to show the world club cup games for $1bn. It just so happens that FIFA have awarded the 2034 world cup to Saudi Arabia....

Prior to this deal no broadcaster was interested in bidding for the World Club Cup games, so it very much looks like the saudi investment fund have paid FIFA $1bn so that they can host the world cup in 2034, in a round about way.

I'll admit that I will probably watch the non-messi MLS club when they take on the big teams. I know Seattle is going to host both PSG and Athletico Madrid which is pretty wild.

Overall though, I don't like this at all. Won't be trying to go to any games and likely won't watch beyond the two games mentioned. It's just too much and completely unnecessary.

Sounders will be raring to test themselves against PSG and Atleti probably

Are you suggesting FIFA maybe a little corrupt?

Same old clubs getting handed more money to make sure they stay near the top.

That isn't sporting competition, that's polishing product for tv. Dull as hell.

I think it's a good idea TBH. The only ones not happy about it are European clubs.
Well, why would they be happy with it?

From a sporting perspective, it's a nonsense. No club from outside Europe has a prayer. Most of the best players from South America are in Europe. What's left are journeymen, never-weres and up-and-comers - the very definition of plucky underdogs. These are great clubs - but football economics means they are mere feeders now to the moneyed leagues in Europe. It's like Everton post-Moshiri and Kenwright taking on Real Madrid, Bayern, and PSG. Pointless.

The Euro clubs will be bought off with money as usual.

It's good for the non-European clubs. They get exposure and prize money that is usually reserved only for European clubs. The world game is very Eurocentric, so I think efforts to move away from that are welcome.
When do you think players should get a rest period, to recover both physically and mentally?
From a European perspective, the clubs involved have huge money. I'm sure they can afford to spend some it on the necessary sports science to keep their players fit. They will probably start their pre-seasons later like they'd do in a world cup year. They also have large enough squads theoretically to cope with it. Chelsea for example have about 1 million players currently out on loan they could use. Also, these clubs often go on end of season tours at this time anyway. And UEFA could reduce the number of games in its competitions. Currently 8 games minimum before you even get to the KO rounds of their comps. 10 if you have to go through a play off by finishing outside the top 8. Is that necessary?

Its necessary to generate even more money for the clubs than the previous set was. Shows the clubs have as their priorities, first make more money, second rest players.

So you agree they play too many games. All your suggestion does is shift the games from one competition to another, not reduce or limit the amount of games they are playing.

So when do the players get a rest?

Like I said in the above post, if the clubs care about their players workloads they should have the resources to manage it. If they weren’t playing in this they might be playing in end of season tours anyway. UEFA can reduce the number of games in its competitions.
