The Current State of Streaming

My IPTV subscription is great, got thousands of worldwide channels plus VOD subscription for two TV’s for £100 a year.
This...and all that other techno-babble, Kodi, firestick etc.
Can somebody put it all into 'Pensioners English'?

Edit; assume no prior knowledge, or skip steps, because 'everybody knows that bit'
it’s generally a re-sold package that runs a bespoke app on an android box (like a fire stick for example).

The app itself connects via an internet connection to a server owned and run by the reseller. This server acts as a content gateway to the main content servers. By content I’m talking about Video on demand and live tv (such as SKY, BT, HBO, Hulu, NowTV).

So you as the user can select to stream live tv shows and movies or access a large collection of Movies and shows.

For this you pay your reseller a fixed annual sum for the service.

Yeah but...

oh aye, all these are killer flicks always worth rewatching...and wasn't too expensive, i mostly bought used condition from amazon/ebay.

let us know your top 50
Here it is.

Wrote comments on the top 10 of the 50. Probably subject to change but this is close to what I think my top 50 is. Gives me a goal when hunting DVD's and Blu Rays now.

This is one of the great things about streaming. The fact that perfectly good Blu-Rays are now appearing on the shelves of charity shops is great for collectors especially on top of the ridiculously cheap DVDs. Even if they stopped releasing on physical format tomorrow there's still enough out there for several life-times.

Same with music - the boon in streaming and the vinyl renaissance is a boon for CD collecting nerds like me.

Soz, i'm not following. Always cool to check out other lists if you have one.

it can get addictive. recently had an urge to hunt down a few of those epic historical flicks from the 50's/60's: Ten Commandments, Quo Vadis, Ben Hur, Spartacus etc. They're probably available on streaming...but it's kinda nice actually owning them properly. On DVD quite cheap. Big piece of cinema history, massive productions. They truly don't make 'em like that anymore (modern epics often use CGI to show large crowds....ugh!).

oh aye, i'm surprised at some of the DVD deals i find...almost giving them away. It's only when hunting for rare cult stuff that you see big asking prices. Brand new releases are still pricey too, as are particular issues (Criterion Collection is notorious for being expensive, tho' well-regarded mastering).

Here in Germany we also have to pay a premium for uncut versions with original audio. Many mass-market DVD releases of 70's/80's flicks have only the awful German dub, and several minutes cut out.

Understandeable why many prefer the convenience of streaming...

still, the media hunt is quite enjoyable. Receiving the DVD, then putting it on, becomes almost like part of the event itself, adding to the overall experience. Total placebo, sure...but there it is.

deffo...and so much quality between 1950-2010, from all over the world.

Netflix/Amazon/Sky/Disney/Spotify etc might sound good value in isolation, but after a decade a few grand has been spent and there's nothing tangible for it. Personally i'm not convinced of most modern productions so not bothered about catching them while they're fresh.

oh yes, Discogs is great!

Was in Home Bargains the other night and seen a dvd of Johnny English for £9.99, i wouldn't class that as cheap.

I have Sky Sports (via NOWTV) and BT Sport and in addition I run two streaming services per month and then switch to another two the following month.

My mate had a jailbreak Firestick and we tried to watch a match on it. It was hopeless - crashing, picture not great, whatever. It put me off every thinking about it again.

My supplier says to avoid Firesticks as they lack storage. I use a dedicated Android box for mine and it's brilliant with a custom built app for their service - again, it's finding a good supplier.

People with fire sticks are just the same as the recent influx of air-fryer owners. Sneering down their nose at anyone who doesn't have one. It's a minefield out there.

I go halves with a mate on the 4 x user Netflix, mainly so I have access to it on my phone when travelling, and for the kids to have it in their bedrooms, but our main TV consumption is via IPTV. £50 a year for literally every channel inc PPV imaginable (plus on-demand series and movies), all in buffer free HD/4K. Trouble is it’s only on one device (Nvidia Shield) but we can move device around house if needed.

I’m amazed that not more people have moved over to IPTV in all honesty, especially the way the monthly subs of streaming services have gone up recently.
I wanted IPTV, but we get about 22mbps download speeds here. If I wasn’t such a sweaty nerd who plays games online I would get it for sure, but that bandwidth is precious.

decent list that, and very doable to collect. your top 3 are all very good 8/10's in my book, top 100 material!

others i've seen:

Sunshine 6/10
Collateral 2/10
The Terminal 3/10
Con Air 5/10
Demolition Man 6/10
Vanilla Sky 8/10
Cube 8/10
Reanimator 6/10
Falling Down 7/10
Final Destination 5/10
Night of the Living Dead 8/10
Duel 8/10
Paranormal Activity 2 - 8/10
Shaun of the Dead 7/10
Life of Brian 7/10
Tango & Cash 5/10
Silent Hill 7/10

and on your list which i own on DVD but not watched yet:

Hangover
Dead Man's Shoes
Man on the Moon
Escape from New York
Return of the Living Dead
In Bruges

Hopefully some 8's (or better!) among that.

Love a good list lol

ps - curious why you have Paranormal Activity 2 but not 1 or 3 in your list? Shame about 4 & 5 being pants, the series had some real promise.
