The Dead Thread

The passing of Denis Law today got me thinking, football as we once knew it has gone forever. Footballers from that era were also characters outside of the game, they resonated with ordinary people, if that’s the correct way to phrase it. Away from the game you’d possibly see them down the pub or at the cinema, or the races, mixing with ordinary every day people. Footballers now have become such protected commodities to the owners of their clubs that they dare not risk attempting to live any kind of normal existence…. It’s actually quite sad.

That happened for me when Stan bowles passed away last year.
Still my favourite football story is the QPR manager giving his team talk at 2.45 and asking where Stan was only to be told he's just popped over to the bookies to put his horses on lol.

Denis Law

The was Jimmy Greaves Then Dennis Law - Then our Roy Vernon in that era - Roy Vernon of Everton could have been the best if he had not smoked 100 cigarettes per day - plus he started smoking as early as 11 years old -

We tried to sign Dennis in our millionaire days under John Moores but failed - a pleasure to see all 3 play - all eyes were on George Best, but Dennis was a superb striker -RIP all above have died now -

Former Thin Lizzy / Whitesnake guitarist John Sykes has died, only 65 RIP

No way!!!!!! Only played on one album ‘Thunder and Lightning’ but played live with them for a while. He was such a different guitarist to what Lizzy had previously, he was a guitarist for the 80s metal scene whereas Moore, Robertson, Gorham were all students of 60s/70s blues rock.

To fully appreciate what he bought to Lizzy, listen to the live album ‘Life’, he’s brilliant on it.
