The Dead Thread

....nah, it was never for me. I signed for a top flight club, scored plenty of goals but never had the desire to 'make it'. Don't for one minute regret the route I took but footy has been so integral to the person I am today.

Funny how you put that Eggs. A really good friend of my older brother was an incredible centre forward in his schooldays and was signed by ManU as a 16-year old. Eric was brilliant, built like the proverbial brick outhouse, two-footed, good in the air and everyone at school reckoned he was nailed on to 'make it'.

Eric used to come home from The Cliff (manure training ground) and then get stuck into his homework and studies, while one of the other kids who was nothing like as academically gifted used to stay on and train/practise loads more.

Eric quit the Manu youth system and to use his own words, "I thought I was better than ***** but he wanted it so much more. He was daft as a brush, but totally dedicated to footie, nowt else in his mind".

The lad he referred to was... Brian Kidd.

...good example, and an indication how youngsters really need to 'want it'. Without going into detail, I honestly never had an inclination to be a footballer but I was clearly very good at it. I signed for a club because they were all knocking on my door but it was never what I wanted to do. I know now why, but I stayed at school and went another route.

Anyway, this is the dead thread and a lad I played against has passed away and that is very sad.

Sadly Eggs, our pal Eric passed three years ago, very sad indeed.

Fair point mate. Not trying to claim that Cuba is the perfect model, just that they had some priorities right. It isnt really a surprise that their economy wasn't better with sanctions for so long. And can we really say we don't torture with Guantantamo etc as well as the occasional suspicious death (David Kelly, Princess Diana). And for political prisoners there is Assange as well as (arguably)some of the Irish republicans in tne past.

Singapore (who's original leader also died this year) is also an interesting benevolent dictatorship kind of place that seems to look after its own but has a capitalist economic system rather than a socialist one.

Alas Colonel Abrams has popped his mortal coil,he's definately trapped now.
